Labor Day weekend is the single busiest beach weekend in San Diego. The rules that matter: beach lots at Mission Beach, Coronado, La Jolla Shores and Moonlight Beach are full by 8:30–9am all three days, hotel rates run at their annual peak with two- or three-night minimums, and restaurant tables downtown and in the beach towns need reservations a week or more out. The best plan is early beach mornings, an inland or bay afternoon, and dinner reserved in advance. Locals dodge the worst of it by going north to Torrey Pines and Cardiff, taking the ferry to Coronado instead of driving, or skipping the coast entirely for Julian, Ramona wineries or Anza-Borrego. Note that beach fire rings and alcohol rules are enforced hard on holiday weekends — alcohol is banned on San Diego city beaches.

Every free beach lot in the county is gone by mid-morning on Labor Day weekend. Arriving at 8am gets you a space, a quiet beach and two hours before the crowd. It also means leaving by 1pm or committing to the whole day.

The Coronado Bridge backs up badly on holiday weekends. The ferry from the Broadway Pier or Convention Center to the Ferry Landing skips it entirely, and bikes ride along for a small fee.
Torrey Pines, Cardiff, Encinitas · Paid lots · Less chaotic
North county beaches take the overflow better than Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. Torrey Pines State Beach has a paid lot that turns over, and Cardiff's beaches have roadside parking along the 101.
Mission Bay Park · Free · Calm water
The bay side has grass, shade, calm water for kids and far more parking than the ocean side. Fiesta Island and Crown Point are the usual local picks for a holiday barbecue.

Late-season baseball often lands on Labor Day weekend, and a downtown game is a good afternoon out of the sun in the upper shaded sections. Tickets are cheapest for weekday getaway games.

Beach towns run small markets, live music and holiday-weekend specials. These are neighborhood-scale, not festival-scale — good for an evening walk rather than a destination.

Labor Day is the last true summer weekend in San Diego, and everything — beaches, freeways, hotel rates — behaves accordingly.
