What is San Diego like in summer? Summer runs warm and dry with 75-80°F highs, ocean water reaching 70-72°F by August, and the biggest crowds of the year. June often starts under 'June Gloom' marine layer that burns off by afternoon, while August and September are the clearest, warmest months.

Rent a pontoon at Mission Bay Sportcenter — $400 for a half day, splits 10 ways. Bring a bluetooth speaker + cooler.
Petco Park under lights + a Gaslamp dinner is the perfect summer weeknight. $20 lawn seats at the Park at the Park.

June–Sept is peak blue whale season — largest animal ever to exist, 15 miles offshore. Hornblower or Flagship, $60.

August has the warmest ocean (68–72°F) and the least June Gloom. September (technically fall, but summer weather) is the sweet spot — same weather, ~25% lower hotel rates, and fewer crowds after Labor Day.
72–78°F daytime, 60–65°F nights along the coast. Inland (El Cajon, Escondido, Ramona) runs 85–95°F. San Diego doesn't do the 100°F heat waves that LA and Vegas get.
A marine layer that keeps coastal areas overcast until 10–11am from late May through late June (sometimes into July, called 'No-Sky July'). Skies clear by lunch and it hits 70°F by afternoon. Inland areas are sunny all day.
In August/September, yes — 68–72°F is comfortable for most people. June is 63°F — kids and swimmers usually want a wetsuit. Bay swimming (Mission Bay, Coronado Bay) is 5–8°F warmer than the ocean.
Peak weekends (July 4, mid-July Comic-Con, Labor Day) are packed — arrive before 9am for parking. Weekdays before 11am and after 5pm are quiet. Silver Strand, Torrey Pines State Beach, and Moonlight Beach are the least crowded of the big ones.
Layers — mornings and nights are 60°F, days are 78°F. Light jacket, swimsuit, reef-safe sunscreen, closed-toe shoes for tide pooling, a reusable water bottle. Umbrella is unnecessary (rainfall in June–August averages 0.2 inches total).
Mid-July (usually the third or fourth week). Downtown hotels sell out and triple in price 6 months out. If Comic-Con isn't your thing, stay in La Jolla, Coronado, or PB — you'll never notice it.
Julian for mountain relief and pie (60 min, 15°F cooler). Temecula wineries (60 min north). La Jolla → Del Mar coast drive with beach stops (all day). Anza-Borrego is too hot in summer — save for spring.
Beach hotels (PB, Mission Beach, Coronado): $350–$650/night in July–August. Downtown: $250–$500. Airbnbs 6+ beds in Mission Beach: $600–$1,200/night. Book by April for July 4 and Comic-Con weeks.
