What Halloween events happen in San Diego? The season centers on Scream Zone at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, Haunted Trail in Balboa Park, family daytime events at the zoo and SeaWorld, and the Whaley House ghost tours in Old Town. Most haunted attractions run from late September through October 31.

Best for: Kids 3–10, no-scare Halloween
Trick-or-treat trails through the park, Lego pumpkin builds, character meet-and-greets in costume, and the Brick or Treat dance party. Zero scares — designed for the under-8 crowd who cry at animatronics.

Del Mar Fairgrounds

Best for: Old-school haunted house night with teens
Three haunted attractions plus a haunted hayride, all on the fairgrounds. Longest-running haunt in San Diego (since 1998). Weekend lines get to 45 minutes — go Thursday or Sunday.

Balboa Park, west of the museums
Price: $30–40
Best for: Outdoor haunt in a real forest setting
A mile-long outdoor scare trail winding through Balboa Park's eucalyptus grove. Live actors, no jump scares from screens — all in-your-face people. Bring closed-toe shoes and a jacket. Not for kids under 12.

San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park
Price: Free with regular admission (~$74)
Best for: Toddlers and grandparents
Trick-or-treat stations along the main loop, animal-themed costume contest, and pumpkin enrichment for the animals (watching a tiger destroy a jack-o-lantern is worth the price alone). Included with any zoo ticket.

Hornblower + Flagship, Embarcadero
Price: $65–95
Best for: Adult Halloween date night
Costume cruises with DJ, bar, and buffet on the bay. Flagship runs a haunted ship theme; Hornblower does a Halloween masquerade with contests. Book the Saturday closest to Halloween 4+ weeks out.

Best for: The classic pumpkin patch day
The pumpkin patch every San Diego local grew up going to — 60,000 pumpkins, hayrides, petting zoo, corn maze, and pony rides. Weekends are packed by 11am; go on a weekday morning or Sunday after 3pm.

Best for: Fall foliage day trip with Halloween energy
Julian is the only place in San Diego County with real fall color (yellow-orange oaks and maples mid-October). Add Julian Pie Company, apple picking at Volcan Mountain, and the historic Old Julian Cemetery walking tour. 60 minutes east of downtown.

Adams Ave, Normal Heights

Best for: Adult neighborhood bar crawl in costume
Adams Ave from Kensington to Normal Heights turns into an unofficial costume crawl — Sycamore Den, Tiger!Tiger!, Blind Lady Ale House, Rosie O'Grady's all get costumed crowds. No cover, no tickets, no shuttle needed.
Halloween night, 8pm–2am
Gaslamp Quarter, downtown
Price: Free to walk, clubs $20–50 cover
Best for: Big-city Halloween party energy
Fifth Avenue closes to cars and becomes a costume runway. Every rooftop bar (Altitude, Sidebar, Nolita Hall) and every club (Parq, Omnia, Fluxx) runs a costume contest with $500–$5,000 prizes. Buy VIP or expect 45-minute lines.
Saturday before Halloween, 4pm–7pm
Little Italy Piazza & India St
Price: $40 wristband (12 pours)
Best for: Adult Halloween with a lighter buzz
12 boutique tasting stops through Little Italy's shops and galleries in costume. Ends at the Piazza with a costume contest and DJ. Sells out — buy tickets by early October.

Star Park & the numbered streets
Price: Free
Best for: The most family-friendly trick-or-treat neighborhood in the county
Coronado does Halloween better than anywhere else — every historic house on Ocean Boulevard, Star Park, and A-J Avenue decorates. Ferry over from downtown around 4pm and walk. Locals hand out full-size candy bars.

Kensington main streets (Marlborough, Adams)
Price: Free
Best for: Walkable neighborhood trick-or-treat with a party feel
One of the top three trick-or-treat neighborhoods in San Diego — sidewalks close to cars, adults hand out drinks in cups, and the Kensington Café stays open late. Park at Kensington Park and walk in.

Fort Stockton Dr & Sunset Blvd
Price: Free
Best for: Historic homes + hills = massive candy hauls
Grand historic Craftsman homes on tree-lined streets, competitive decorating, and hills that mean you'll actually earn the candy. Fort Stockton and Sunset Blvd are the epicenter.
Late October Saturday night, 7pm–11pm
USS Midway Museum, Embarcadero
Price: $75–150
Best for: Adults who want a haunted aircraft carrier
The Midway does a themed evening event — DJ on the flight deck, costume contest, and the below-decks hangar bay lit red with ghost-tour vibes. The ship is legitimately reported as haunted; the stories are the real draw.

Old Town Plaza + Sherman Heights Community Center
Price: Free
Best for: Extending the Halloween weekend with real cultural depth
The Old Town Día de los Muertos festival has processions, altars, face painting, and traditional music. Sherman Heights runs the more community-driven version. Two of the most beautiful nights in San Diego — and totally free.
Halloween 2026 falls on a Saturday, October 31 — which makes it the biggest costume/bar night of the year in Gaslamp and Adams Ave. Rideshare surges hard between 1am and 3am; either stay downtown or plan an early exit.
Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld is the highest-production event (5 haunted houses, 3 scare zones, actor-driven scares) and the scariest overall. Haunted Trail of Balboa Park is a close second and more atmospheric — a real forest with live actors instead of scripted scenes.
Coronado (Ocean Blvd + Star Park), Kensington (Marlborough Dr + Adams Ave), and Mission Hills (Fort Stockton + Sunset Blvd) are the top three. All three have historic homes, walkable sidewalks, and neighborhoods that hand out full-size candy. Ferry to Coronado around 4pm and walk from Ferry Landing.
Boo at the Zoo (free with admission, no scares), Legoland Brick or Treat (October weekends, included with ticket), SeaWorld Spooktacular daytime hours (character-driven, not scary), and Bates Nut Farm pumpkin patch. All safe for kids under 8.
Gaslamp for big-club energy (Parq, Omnia, Fluxx all run costume contests with $500+ prizes), Adams Avenue for a neighborhood bar crawl (no cover, no ticket), and the Little Italy Halloween Wine Walk for something lighter. Buy Gaslamp VIP or expect 45-minute lines by 10pm.
The Whaley House in Old Town was declared 'the most haunted house in America' by Life Magazine. El Campo Santo Cemetery next door is on the National Register. Late September through October 31. Bates Nut Farm (Valley Center) is the classic. City-side, Pumpkin Station has multiple locations (Del Mar, Chula Vista, Kearny Mesa) with rides and petting zoos. Weekdays and Sunday afternoons are far calmer than Saturdays.
October averages 75°F daytime and 60°F overnight with very little rain. Costumes with heavy fabric overheat before sundown; layer or bring a costume-friendly jacket for evening trick-or-treat runs and outdoor haunts.
Gaslamp clubs and rooftop bars decorate hard and run contests with cash prizes. Neighborhood bars (Adams Ave, Little Italy, North Park) run casual costume nights the Saturday before Halloween. Restaurants generally don't decorate — but hotel bars (US Grant, Grant Grill, the Del) always do.
Milder scale than West Hollywood or Las Vegas, but San Diego has the best neighborhood trick-or-treating in Southern California (Coronado, Kensington) and one of the top haunted-house events on the West Coast (Howl-O-Scream). If you want small-city warmth + a big enough club scene, San Diego wins.
