Base yourself near downtown, Little Italy or Old Town; pair the waterfront with Balboa Park. The Trolley does not run directly to La Jolla Cove or the Zoo.

Balboa Park is free to enter (museums ticketed), the Timken Museum is always free, Little Italy Mercato is free to browse, Sunset Cliffs is free, Coronado Beach is free, and most neighborhoods host free live music on Friday and Saturday nights (Seaport Village, Liberty Station, Quartyard).
Concerts and shows rotate weekly (see events grid below), plus the standing menu: Gaslamp Quarter bar crawl, rooftop cocktails at Top of the Hyatt or Kettner Exchange, live comedy at American Comedy Co. or The Comedy Store, or a Padres game April–September. Reservations for hyped restaurants sell out by Wednesday.
Choose an indoor museum in Balboa Park, the New Children's Museum, the Fleet Science Center, an art museum or a food stop along Convoy Street. The USS Midway has indoor hangar-deck exhibits but also an exposed flight deck, so it is not fully indoors. Check the hourly forecast and museum hours before leaving.
Zoo or Safari Park (pick one — not both), the New Children's Museum, Belmont Park in Mission Beach, Coronado Beach with the Hotel del, Legoland if you have a full day, and the Fleet Science Center at Balboa Park for rainy hours.
Check each block's posted meter hours and event restrictions rather than assuming free parking. Many San Diego meters are not enforced on Sundays, but rules vary by zone and special-event parking near Petco Park can cost more; compare a garage with taking the Trolley.
For concerts, Padres games and ticketed festivals, yes — weekend inventory thins by Thursday. Street fairs, farmers markets and Balboa Park grounds need nothing. Restaurant tables in Little Italy and the Gaslamp are the real bottleneck: book Friday and Saturday dinner by midweek.
