The Gaslamp Quarter, Embarcadero, Little Italy, Petco Park and much of the waterfront fit into a compact central area. Trolley connections extend that walkable base to Old Town, Mission Valley, UC San Diego and the border. Balboa Park is reachable on foot from downtown, but the uphill walk and the park's size make bus Route 7 or a short rideshare easier for many visitors.

Downtown · The most walkable zone in the county
Fifth Avenue's restaurants and bars, Petco Park, the Rady Shell, Seaport Village, and the USS Midway are all within a 20-minute waterfront walk. Add the trolley and you can reach Old Town, Barrio Logan, and the border without ever driving.
Local tip: This is the best car-free base for first-timers — you can do a full 3-day trip from a downtown hotel with zero rental car days.
The beaches · 3.5-mile flat oceanfront path
The boardwalk runs from South Mission Beach to North Pacific Beach — bars, taco shops, Crystal Pier, and Belmont Park all on one flat oceanfront strip. Rent a beach cruiser and the whole coast is yours.
Local tip: Walk or bike the boardwalk; don't try to 'walk to the beach' from an inland Mission Valley hotel — it's 7+ miles.
Across the bay · Flat, compact, and made for strolling
Orange Avenue runs 1.5 miles from the ferry landing to the Hotel del Coronado — shops, restaurants, and one of America's best beaches in a straight, flat line. The ferry from downtown makes it a perfect car-free day trip.
Local tip: The Coronado Ferry ($7ish each way) departs from the Broadway Pier — it's both transit and a bay tour.
Downtown adjacent · Two of the city's best walking days
Little Italy's India Street is a half-mile dining corridor; Balboa Park's museums and gardens reward a full day on foot. They're about a mile apart — walkable between, though the park itself is huge.
Local tip: Saturday morning: Little Italy Mercato farmers market, then Uber 5 minutes to Balboa Park for the afternoon.
San Diego's sprawl is the catch. These popular plans fail without a car or rideshare.
County-wide · La Jolla → PB → Coronado = 30+ miles
Each beach town is walkable on its own, but they're 5–15 miles apart with no coastal rail. 'One beach per day' is the right rhythm, or rent a car to hop.
Local tip: Rideshare between beach towns runs $15–30 per hop — often cheaper than a rental plus beach parking.
Escondido · Safari Park is 35 miles northeast
The Zoo is in Balboa Park (easy), but the Safari Park is way out in Escondido. There's no practical transit — drive or book a tour shuttle.
Local tip: Don't schedule the Safari Park on the same day as anything else; it's a full-day commitment with the drive.
The scenic fringes · The best views are at the edges
Torrey Pines Reserve, Sunset Cliffs, Cabrillo National Monument, and Mount Soledad all lack meaningful transit. These are drives (or long bike rides), period.
Local tip: Combine Cabrillo + Sunset Cliffs in one Point Loma loop — they're 10 minutes apart.

No car needed · Trolley + ferry + feet

Local tip: Stay anywhere between the Gaslamp and Little Italy and everything on this itinerary is walkable or one trolley ride.
Pacific Beach · Boardwalk + one rideshare
Day 1: Boardwalk, Crystal Pier, Belmont Park, beach bars. Day 2: Rideshare to La Jolla Cove ($15–20) for snorkeling and seals, rideshare back for sunset.
