Pendry San Diego
Gaslamp Quarter · $400–650 · rooftop pool · 317 rooms

The nicest boutique stay in the Gaslamp — sharp design, a genuinely good rooftop pool scene, a full spa, and five bars and restaurants under one roof (Lionfish for sushi and crudo, Fifth & Rose in the lobby, Nason's Beer Hall downstairs). Two blocks from Petco Park and five minutes' walk to the Convention Center, so it doubles as the best Padres-weekend and conference splurge. Best for couples and anyone who wants the night to start where they're sleeping.

Local tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor away from Fifth Avenue — the Gaslamp is loud until 2am on weekends. Valet runs about $60 a night, so skip the rental car if you're staying downtown.
