Which side has the ocean views?

Heading north from San Diego, sit on the left (west) side. The best stretches are Del Mar's bluffs, the San Clemente beachfront where the track runs on the sand, and the long Ventura–Santa Barbara run. Heading south, take the right side.

Coach vs Business Class

Business Class costs roughly $20–$30 more and gets you a wider seat, a quieter car, a complimentary non-alcoholic drink and a snack. On the San Diego–LA leg it's usually not necessary; on a full run to Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo it earns its keep.

Booking and saving money

• Fares are dynamic — booking a week or two ahead typically saves 20–40%.
• Amtrak's 'Pacific Surfliner Value' fares and the multi-ride 10-trip pass cut costs for regulars.
• Kids 2–12 ride half price with an adult; military, seniors and students get discounts.
• Groups of three or more often qualify for companion discounts on the Surfliner.

Track closures and detours

The bluffs at Del Mar and the San Clemente slide zone have forced multi-week closures in recent years, with buses bridging the gap. Always check the Pacific Surfliner status page the day before travel — the bus bridge adds about 45 minutes.

Every Surfliner station from San Diego north

• San Diego (Santa Fe Depot) — trolley connections, walkable to the Gaslamp, Little Italy and the waterfront.
• Old Town — free parking is limited but this is the easiest boarding point if you're driving in from the north or east.
• Solana Beach — Cedros Design District across the tracks; the Del Mar racetrack shuttle runs from here in season.
• Oceanside — transfer to the COASTER and the Sprinter, plus the pier and harbor within walking distance.
• San Clemente Pier, San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Santa Ana, Anaheim (ARTIC for Disneyland), Fullerton.
• Los Angeles Union Station, then Burbank Airport, Van Nuys, Chatsworth, Simi Valley, Oxnard, Ventura, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Goleta and San Luis Obispo.

Riding the Surfliner with kids, bikes or luggage

• There are no seat assignments — a family of four should board early at Santa Fe Depot to get facing seats at a table.
• Luggage goes in overhead racks or the downstairs bay; there's no weight check and no fee for two carry-ons plus two personal items.
• Bike racks are free but must be reserved when booking; walk-up space is a handful of slots and fills on summer weekends.
• Strollers fit in the lower-level accessible area — the upper level requires a narrow staircase.
• Restrooms are on the lower level of each car, and the cafe car sells beer, wine, coffee and sandwiches.

Surfliner vs driving vs flying to LA

Driving is about 120 miles and 2 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic, plus $30-$50 a day to park in downtown LA. Flying takes under an hour in the air but 3.5 hours door to door once you add security and the drive to LAX. The train is 2h45m at roughly $40-$50, lands you in the middle of downtown LA on the Metro network, and is the only option where you can work, drink or sleep the whole way.
