Rideshare pickup is at a dedicated island

The new T1 opens in phases; some gates and curbs shift. Check your airline's terminal on the airport site before you go. Southwest, Alaska, Frontier, Spirit → T1; Delta, United, American, JetBlue, Hawaiian → T2.
There's a free inter-terminal shuttle
Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are a 10-minute walk apart or one stop on the free red terminal shuttle. If your connection is under an hour, walk — the shuttle sometimes waits.
Curbside is aggressive
Airport police actively move cars along at arrivals. Have your driver use the cell phone lot until you're curbside. For departures, hug the terminal curb closest to your airline.
Public transit from the airport
SAN doesn't have a train station on-property, but it's better connected than most people realize. MTS Route 992 is the workhorse — runs every 15 minutes from both terminals to Broadway downtown, hitting most Gaslamp hotels along the way. $2.50 one-way, or $6 for a day pass that includes the trolley.
For the Coaster (the commuter rail north to Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Carlsbad, Oceanside), take the free red shuttle to the Middletown or Old Town trolley station and transfer. The Coaster is genuinely faster than driving north between 3–7 PM.
