A transparent look at the scores, criteria, and editorial process behind every Sandi Spots ranking.
Every place in a Sandi Spots ranking receives a score out of 100. The score is a weighted total of five criteria specific to the category. A score in the 90s means a place is exceptional and worth a special trip. Scores in the 80s are solid local favorites. Anything below 80 did not make the list.
Scores are not based on aggregated user reviews, Yelp ratings, or paid placements. They are editorial judgments made by Sandi Spots based on repeated visits, local reputation, and observable consistency.
We rank categories that San Diego locals and visitors actually search for: tacos, burgers, coffee, beaches, breweries, rooftop bars, and more. Within each category, we select places that are currently open, publicly accessible, and consistently relevant to the category.
We do not include pop-ups, private events, or places that cannot be reliably visited by a reader. We update rankings when a place closes, changes ownership, or falls below the standard of the list.
