Finding a CPA or Tax Preparer in San Diego

What a return really costs locally, how to verify a preparer in two minutes, and when you do not need to pay anyone at all.

    Last updated

    Quick answer

Most San Diego households do not need a CPA. If your return is a W-2, a standard deduction, and maybe some brokerage interest, free filing through IRS Direct File or CalFile handles it, and a VITA site will do it in person at no charge if you are under the income limit. You start needing a paid preparer when a return has moving parts: rental property, an ADU you rent out, self-employment or 1099 income, RSUs and ESPP from a biotech or defense employer, a home sale with capital gains, crypto, or income in both California and another state. Expect roughly $350 to $600 for a straightforward itemized return locally, $600 to $1,200 once you add a rental or a Schedule C, and $1,200 and up for a small business return with a K-1. Three credentials can legally represent you before the IRS — CPA, enrolled agent, and tax attorney — and an enrolled agent is often the best value for a complicated personal return. Anyone charging you in California must at minimum be CTEC-registered, have a PTIN, and sign your return; a preparer who will not sign, who bases their fee on the size of your refund, or who wants your refund deposited into their account is a preparer you walk away from. Book by January if you want a February appointment — good local firms close their books to new clients by mid-February.

How to vet a preparer before you hand over your documents

Check the license in the state database

The California Board of Accountancy license lookup shows whether a CPA is active and whether they have been disciplined. It is free and takes under a minute. Enrolled agents can be verified through the IRS.

Confirm a PTIN and a signature

Every paid preparer must have a Preparer Tax Identification Number and must sign the return they prepare. A 'ghost preparer' who leaves the paid-preparer box blank is leaving you holding the bag.

Ask how the fee is calculated

Flat fee per form or hourly is normal. A fee that is a percentage of your refund is a red flag and violates professional standards — it creates an incentive to inflate your refund with positions you will have to defend.

    Ask who actually prepares it

At larger firms a staff preparer does the work and a partner reviews it, which is fine — you just want to know, and you want the reviewer's name on it.

Ask about audit support in writing

Some firms include correspondence-audit support in the fee; others bill hourly from the first IRS letter. Get the answer before you sign the engagement letter, not after.

Ask what they know about your specific income

San Diego has clusters — military and VA benefits, biotech RSUs, defense contracting, short-term rentals, cross-border income with Baja. A preparer who handles yours daily will find things a generalist misses.

How to verify anything on this page

    • • Nothing here is tax, legal, or investment advice. It is a starting map of how the local systems work so you know what to ask a licensed professional and what a fair price looks like.
    • • Every fee range is a mid-2026 San Diego County snapshot. Quotes vary by complexity, and any firm should give you a written engagement letter with the price before work starts.
    • • Licenses are public and free to check. CPAs are searchable in the California Board of Accountancy license lookup, non-CPA paid preparers must appear in the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers or the CTEC register, and advisors show up in FINRA BrokerCheck and the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure system.
    • • Property tax numbers come from your own bill. The San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector publishes your parcel's exact bill online, and the County Assessor handles assessed value, exemptions, and Prop 19 transfers. Use those two offices rather than a Zillow estimate.
    • • Deadlines move when they land on a weekend or holiday. Confirm the current year's dates with the county and the IRS before relying on one.
    • • Free help exists and is real. VITA sites, AARP Tax-Aide, the county's Small Business Development Center, and SCORE San Diego all provide no-cost service to people who qualify.

    Frequently asked

CPA, enrolled agent, or tax preparer — what is the difference?

A CPA is licensed by the state and can do audits, financial statements, and complex planning as well as tax returns. An enrolled agent is federally licensed specifically in taxation and has the same unlimited rights to represent you before the IRS, usually at a lower hourly rate. A CTEC-registered preparer is registered to prepare California returns but has limited representation rights. For a complicated personal return, an enrolled agent is often the best value; for a business with financial statements, audits, or entity planning, you want a CPA.

When should I book a San Diego CPA for the April deadline?

December or early January. Most established local firms stop accepting new clients around mid-February because their capacity is booked. If you are contacting firms in March, expect to be put on extension — which is fine and free, but remember an extension extends the time to file, not the time to pay, so you still need to estimate and send what you owe by the April deadline.

Do I owe California tax if I work remotely from San Diego for an out-of-state company?

Generally yes. California taxes residents on worldwide income regardless of where the employer sits, and if your employer is not withholding California tax you will likely need quarterly estimated payments to avoid an underpayment penalty. The reverse case — living elsewhere and working for a San Diego company — depends on where you physically perform the work. Both situations are worth one paid hour with a preparer before your first filing.

How do I check whether a San Diego tax preparer is legitimate?

Search their name in the California Board of Accountancy lookup for CPAs, the CTEC register for California preparers, or the IRS Directory of Federal Tax Return Preparers. Confirm they have a PTIN, will sign your return, and will give you a copy of the filed return. Never sign a blank or incomplete return, and never let a refund be routed to anyone's account but yours.

Is it worth paying a CPA if I only have RSUs?

Usually for at least the first year. Equity compensation from San Diego biotech and tech employers gets misreported constantly because the brokerage 1099-B shows a cost basis of zero or the wrong basis for shares already taxed as wages — which means paying tax twice on the same money. A preparer who does this daily catches it in minutes. After you have seen one correct return you can often self-file in later years.
