Beach vacation
Mid-August through September. Water is 70–72°F, marine layer gone, and after Labor Day the crowds drop while the weather stays perfect.
Budget trip
January (after New Year's), early February, or mid-November. Hotel rates are 30–50% below summer, restaurants have Restaurant Week deals in January, and the weather is still 65–68°F.
Family with kids
Late June through July if you need summer break. Otherwise April spring break week — warm enough for the beach, cool enough to walk the zoo without wilting.
Surfing
September through November for warm water and consistent south/southwest swells. Winter (Dec–Feb) has bigger north swells but 58°F water.
Hiking
March through May, or October through December. Anything from June to September is too hot for the desert and inland peaks like Cowles Mountain.
Whale watching
Mid-December through March for gray whales. Blue whales come through June through September but sightings are less predictable.
Wildflowers
Late February through mid-April in Anza-Borrego. Peak varies each year based on winter rain — check DesertUSA reports before driving out.
Avoiding crowds
November (skip Thanksgiving), January (after Jan 3), or early February. September also works — locals think it's peak but tourists have left.

The three-week window from January 3 through late January is the cheapest of the year. Mid-November (skipping Thanksgiving week) and early February are close seconds. Hotel rates run 30–50% below July prices.
Not "avoid," exactly, but be aware: Comic-Con week (mid-July) prices downtown hotels out of most budgets, July 4th weekend is packed and expensive, and Christmas through New Year's Eve is peak-priced. If you have to visit those weeks, book at least 3 months ahead.
