From Warehouses to Padres Park
Until the early 2000s, East Village was downtown San Diego's forgotten quadrant — a sleepy mix of warehouses, single-room-occupancy hotels, and parking lots. The construction of Petco Park (opened 2004) catalyzed one of the largest urban transformations in San Diego history.
In the two decades since, East Village has added more residential units than any other downtown neighborhood, anchored by the IDEA District — a planned innovation and design corridor along Park Boulevard. The Central Library (2013) and dozens of craft breweries followed.
The Downtown Brewery Crawl
East Village has quietly become the densest brewery cluster in downtown San Diego. A walkable crawl: start at Mission Brewery (in the historic 1894 Wonder Bread building) for a Mission Blonde, then walk to Half Door Brewing in the 1893 Victorian on G Street.
Continue to Resident Brewing inside The Local for a flight of seasonals, then finish at Bivouac Ciderworks for outdoor-themed dry ciders. Bonus stop: Border X Brewing in nearby Barrio Logan, just one Trolley stop south.
The whole crawl covers about a mile and is most fun on Friday or Saturday afternoons before a Padres home game.
