Downtown covers several distinct pockets: the Gaslamp Quarter (nightlife, tourists, Fifth Avenue), East Village (Petco Park, newer restaurants, breweries), and Little Italy's edge along the waterfront. Walkable end to end in about 20 minutes.

Andaz has the livelier scene and the better rooftop bar, so it's the pick for a group treating the afternoon as an event. Hotel Republic is the value play: a cheaper pass for a quieter deck, which is the right call if you want to actually read a book.
Day passes are capacity-limited and frequently sell out on summer weekends and game days — buy online the morning of. Check the resale platforms too, since both properties list through third-party day-pass services at varying prices.
