Baseball at Lane Field

San Diego's baseball roots run through downtown. The Pacific Coast League Padres played at Lane Field on the waterfront from 1936 to 1957, and a young Ted Williams — a San Diego native from North Park — got his professional start there before the Red Sox signed him.

The major league Padres arrive

San Diego joined the National League as an expansion team in 1969, playing at San Diego Stadium in Mission Valley, later renamed Jack Murphy and then Qualcomm. The Padres played there for 35 seasons, reaching the World Series in 1984 and 1998.

The 1911 warehouse in left field

The Western Metal Supply Co. building was built in 1911 as a plumbing supply warehouse and was slated for demolition until preservationists fought to save it. It was incorporated into the park's design, with the left-field foul pole painted on its corner — the only building in the majors that is legally part of the field of play.

Opening day, 2004

Petco Park opened on April 8, 2004, after a contentious public financing fight and a construction halt in 2000 when the funding collapsed. The deal that restarted it included a strict ballpark district plan requiring the surrounding blocks to be developed — which is why East Village exists as a neighborhood today.

The East Village transformation

Before the ballpark, the area east of the Gaslamp was largely warehouses, vacant lots and single-room-occupancy hotels. The stadium anchored one of the largest urban redevelopments in California history, replacing them with thousands of condos, hotels and restaurants in under two decades.

Toyota Terrace and infield box

Best all-around views of the field with in-seat service in parts of the level. Expensive, and worth it once.

Third-base side (sections 105-119)

The shade side for afternoon games and the better view of the skyline. If you're picking one side for a day game, pick this one.

Upper deck behind home plate

The best value in the ballpark — a full view of the field, the bay and the skyline for a fraction of lower-bowl pricing, and it gets shade early.

Gallagher Square

The grassy outfield park behind center field. Cheapest ticket, standing and lawn viewing, a playground, and free rein for kids who won't sit still. Arrive early for a good patch of grass.

The Western Metal Supply Co. building

Group and rooftop seating built into the brick warehouse in left field. A distinctive experience but a distant view of the plate.

Rooftop and porch areas

Standing-room social spaces with bars and a field view. Good for a casual night out, poor if you want to actually watch every pitch.

Ballpark food worth the line

Petco leans heavily on local vendors — carne asada fries, San Diego-style tacos, and craft beer from county breweries rather than generic concession fare. The best stands are on the field level concourse behind the outfield.

Bringing your own food

Outside food is generally allowed in a clear bag, along with sealed non-alcoholic drinks in plastic. That plus a clear bag is the cheapest way to feed a family here.

Stadium tours

Roughly 80-minute guided tours run most non-game days and go into the dugout, onto the warning track and through press and premium areas. Book online; they sell out on school holidays.

Concerts and non-baseball events

Petco hosts stadium concerts, rugby and other events in the offseason and around the schedule. Bag and gate rules are usually the same but entry times differ — check the specific event page.

Before and after the game

The East Village and Gaslamp blocks north of the park are wall-to-wall bars and restaurants. Reserve for a pre-game dinner on weekend home games or expect a 45-minute wait.

Trolley

The Green and Orange lines stop at 12th & Imperial and Gaslamp Quarter, both a short walk from the gates. Trains run frequently before first pitch and are packed for 30 minutes after the last out.

Local tip: Buy the day pass on the app before you leave — the platform machines have long lines on game nights.

Parking lots and garages

Official lots run $30–$60 for premium games and $20–$30 midweek. Garages six to ten blocks north drop to $10–$20 and add a 12-minute walk.

Local tip: Pre-book through a parking app — drive-up rates are consistently higher than reserved ones.

Rideshare

Designated pickup zones sit a few blocks from the gates, and post-game surge routinely runs 2–3x for 30–40 minutes.

Local tip: Walk ten minutes toward Little Italy or East Village before requesting — the price drops noticeably.

When to arrive

Gates open 90 minutes before first pitch (two hours for some games). Arriving at gate-open gets you batting practice, the shortest concession lines, and easy parking.

Local tip: Weekend and rivalry games need a 45-minute earlier buffer than weeknight games.

Sun and shade

Day games bake the third-base and outfield sides until late afternoon; first-base-side upper sections get shade earliest. Night games are mild and often need a jacket by the 7th.

Local tip: For an afternoon game with kids, prioritize shade over proximity — it matters more than the view.

Best value seats

Upper infield and the Toyota Terrace corners give a full-field view at a fraction of lower-bowl pricing. Outfield and the Park at the Park are the cheapest entries.

Food worth the calories

Petco leans local — fish tacos, carne asada, craft beer from San Diego breweries, and a rotating chef stand. Expect $18–$22 for a beer and a food item.

Local tip: Sealed water bottles and outside food in a clear bag are allowed; check the current bag policy before you pack.

Kids and non-baseball fans

The Park at the Park lawn, playground, and beach-sand area behind center field give kids somewhere to go when attention runs out around the 5th inning.

Local tip: Buy lawn tickets for a first game with young kids and upgrade next time.
