    Getting There

    OB is 15 minutes from downtown via I-8 west. Parking is mostly free side-street parking — usually findable, especially mid-week.

    What Makes Ocean Beach Special

    OB has stubbornly resisted the gentrification that hit Pacific Beach and North Park. The result is a neighborhood that feels like 1995 in the best way — old surf shops, hand-painted signs, and a Wednesday-night farmers market that's been a community ritual for over 20 years.

    The OB Pier (1,971 feet — the longest concrete pier on the West Coast) anchors the south end, though it has been closed to the public since October 2023 and is slated for replacement. Dog Beach anchors the north. In between is Newport Avenue, four blocks of dive bars, taco shops, and antique stores.

    Why OB Refuses to Change

    Ocean Beach is the neighborhood San Diego built a community planning code around. In 1976, residents passed a 30-foot height limit on all coastal development, and OB has fiercely defended its small-town character ever since. The result is a beach community that genuinely looks like 1985 — old surf shacks, hand-painted signs, mom-and-pop antique stores, and almost no chains.

    It's also the most politically active beach neighborhood in San Diego. The Wednesday-night farmers market doubles as a community town hall, and any developer proposing a large project here learns quickly that OB will turn out to fight it.

    Dog Beach: A Practical Guide

    Dog Beach sits at the very north end of OB where the San Diego River meets the Pacific. It's been off-leash 24/7 since 1972 — the first legally designated leash-free beach in the United States.

    Best times: weekday mornings (7–10am) for fewer crowds and friendlier dogs. Avoid the river mouth after rain — water quality drops fast. Free parking lot fills up by 9am on weekends; overflow parking on Voltaire Street.

    What to bring: a long towel (sand sticks to wet dogs aggressively), a tennis ball or chuck-it, fresh water, and a leash for the walk back to the car. There's a free dog wash station at the south end of the lot.

    Parking, from experience
    The lot at the end of Newport by the beach is small and competitive. Voltaire Street and the blocks around it are far easier, and the walk down to the sand takes only a few minutes — read the signs, because some blocks are permit-restricted.
    When to go
    Wednesday afternoon the Newport Avenue farmers market closes the street, which changes both the parking situation and the character of the whole strip. It is the best time to see OB as locals use it.
    Neighborhood advice
    OB is walkable, scruffy and dog-friendly, and it is the least polished beach town in the county — that is the appeal. If you want resort polish, this is the wrong beach.
