The City of San Diego staffs nine oceanfront lifeguard stations year-round — Ocean Beach, South Mission Beach, Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, North Pacific Beach, Children's Pool, La Jolla Cove and La Jolla Shores among them — generally from 9am to dusk, with extra towers added for summer. Coronado keeps its Central Beach tower staffed year-round and adds seasonal towers between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Our beach database currently shows 7 beaches with confirmed year-round staffing; elsewhere the towers are summer only, and some beaches publish no staffing detail at all, which we mark as not confirmed rather than guess. Two things matter beyond the list. A staffed tower covers the water in front of it, not a mile of beach, so swim in front of the tower rather than at the quiet end. And the towers close at dusk everywhere in the county, which makes evening and early-morning swims unguarded no matter which beach you pick.

Choosing a beach around the towers
Winter and spring swims
Outside summer, the seasonal beaches have nobody in the tower. This is when the difference between a permanent station and a summer one matters most.
Surfing beaches are zoned
On city beaches a black-and-yellow checkered flag marks where the swimming zone ends and the surfing zone starts. Swim on the right side of it.
Bay beaches
Mission Bay's beaches are calmer than the ocean but have thinner guard coverage and their own hazards — boat traffic and sudden drop-offs at dredged edges.
Dogs and unguarded stretches
The dog beaches are some of the least guarded sand in the city. Worth knowing before you swim while the dog runs.

Check the rip risk
The weather service publishes a low, moderate or high rip current risk for the county coast every day, and rips are what lifeguards spend their day on.
Check water quality
The County posts bacteria advisories on white signs at the access point and recommends staying out for 72 hours after rain. A staffed tower tells you nothing about the water quality.
