San Diego has a handful of genuinely off-leash beaches. Ocean Beach Dog Beach is the flagship: off-leash 24 hours a day, year-round, at the north end of Ocean Beach by the San Diego River mouth. Coronado Dog Beach sits at the far northwest end of Coronado near the Naval Air Station and is off-leash during daylight hours. Fiesta Island in Mission Bay is a huge off-leash area with bay shoreline — technically not ocean, but the biggest run space in the city. Del Mar's North Beach, known as Dog Beach, allows off-leash from roughly October through mid-June and requires leashes in summer, and Cardiff and other North County beaches restrict dogs entirely or seasonally. Everywhere else in the city, dogs are generally banned from beaches between 9am and 6pm in summer and allowed on leash outside those hours. Rules are enforced, fines are real, and lifeguards will tell you. Rinse your dog afterward: sand fleas, tar, and saltwater irritation are the common complaints.

The country's first official leash-free beach and still the busiest. Sand, surf, and a river channel that dogs love and that runs murky after rain. Free lot fills early on weekends; there's a rinse station and a dog wash across the street.
At the north end of Coronado's beach near the Hotel del's opposite corner. Wide, flat, and less chaotic than OB, with jets from North Island overhead. Parking is street-side and fills midday.
