North Beach — everyone calls it Dog Beach — runs north of the river mouth to Solana Beach and allows dogs off leash outside the summer months, with a free dirt lot off Camino del Mar that fills early. Between them, the beach along Coast Boulevard is quieter and best for a walk. A grassy bluff-edge park with a playground, picnic tables and restrooms sitting directly above the sand. It's the easiest place in town to spend a whole afternoon with small kids without committing to the beach.
Local tip: The lawn is the best free sunset seat in Del Mar — bring a blanket and skip the restaurant wait.

Del Mar splits the year: dogs run off leash on North Beach through the cooler months, and leash rules tighten during the summer season. Signage at the entrances states the current rule — read it, because it's enforced.

The river mouth

The San Dieguito River meets the ocean at the south end of the beach. After winter rain it runs deep and dirty enough that dogs shouldn't drink from it or swim through it; a day or two after a storm it's fine again.

A free unpaved lot sits off Camino del Mar near the north end. It holds a few dozen cars and is full by about 9am on weekends year-round because the dog crowd is up early.

On Del Mar Thoroughbred Club race days the town's parking is consumed by the track, traffic on Via de la Valle backs up for miles, and the beach lots fill earlier than usual. Either come before 9am or pick another beach that day.

Del Mar's coastline runs about two and a half miles and behaves like three separate beaches. Parking rules and dog rules change with each one.
Main Beach (15th Street)
Lifeguards year-round, restrooms, showers and the closest access to the restaurants on Camino del Mar. The busiest and easiest stretch.
Local tip: The 15th Street lot fills by 10am in summer; metered street spots along Coast Boulevard turn over faster.
North Beach / Dog Beach
North of the river mouth. Off-leash mid-September through mid-June, leashed in summer, and consistently the widest sand at low tide.

Del Mar's calendar dominates the town. The racing season and the fair change traffic, parking and restaurant waits enormously.
Racing season and the fair
The San Diego County Fair in June and the summer racing meet fill Jimmy Durante Boulevard and the beach lots from late morning.
Local tip: On fair and race days, park south near Torrey Pines and walk north instead of fighting the town.
Low tide opens the walk north
At low tide you can walk from Main Beach north past the river mouth toward Solana Beach on hard sand; at high tide the route pinches out.
Local tip: Check the tide chart before planning a long beach walk — this is the most common Del Mar miscalculation.
The river mouth after rain
The San Dieguito River outlet can carry runoff after storms, and the county posts closures at the mouth for 72 hours after significant rain.
Local tip: Swim well south of the river mouth for three days after any real rainfall.

Camino del Mar's bluff-top restaurants and the on-the-sand options at the north end both work, but they book out on weekend sunsets.
