For an unobstructed ocean sunset with a table, the short list is George's at the Cove Ocean Terrace and The Marine Room in La Jolla, Tower23's oceanfront patio in Pacific Beach, Jake's Del Mar directly on the sand, and Sunset Cliffs-adjacent Point Loma spots like Mitch's Seafood for a working-harbor version. Coronado's Coronado Island Marriott and the Hotel del's oceanfront patios give you the skyline and the water respectively. The single most important booking rule: reserve for roughly 60–75 minutes before sunset, not at sunset — in summer that means a 6:30–7:00 pm table, in winter closer to 3:45–4:15 pm — and ask specifically for a patio or window table when you book, because most of these rooms have plenty of seats with no view at all.

The most dramatic dining room in the county — at high tide the surf actually breaks against the windows. Fine-dining prices and a jacket-optional but dressy room. Check a tide chart before booking; a high tide near sunset is the version people talk about.
Local tip: The bar takes walk-ins and has the same window line at a fraction of the tab.
La Jolla Village · $$$ · Rooftop Ocean Terrace
Three restaurants in one building; the open-air Ocean Terrace on the top floor is the sunset one, looking straight down the cove. More relaxed and more affordable than the downstairs dining room.
Local tip: Terrace tables are limited and go first for the hour before sunset — book two to three weeks out for weekends.
Pacific Beach · $$$ · Boardwalk-level
Glass-walled and right on the boardwalk, so you get the sunset plus the whole PB scene going past. Best choice if you want the view without a formal room.
Del Mar · $$$ · On the sand
Sits essentially on Del Mar's beach with a long window line. A local institution for anniversaries; the lunch and happy-hour seatings are the value play.
Point Loma · $$ · Casual
Point Loma's casual seafood spots don't all have the cliff view, so the classic move is dinner nearby and the actual sunset from Sunset Cliffs Natural Park a few minutes away — free, and the best sunset in the city.
Local tip: Park early on the Ladera Street end and stay well back from the crumbling cliff edge.

Built out over the water on Harbor Island with the downtown skyline directly across the bay. The sun sets behind you here, which means you watch the skyline turn gold instead of watching the sun drop.

A working-dock fish shack on the sportfishing marina. No white tablecloths, excellent fish tacos, and the light on the boats at golden hour is better than most restaurants can manage.
Coronado · $$$ · Ferry Landing area
The Ferry Landing and Marriott patios look back at downtown across the bay. Take the ferry over rather than driving; it's part of the evening and skips the bridge traffic.
Gaslamp / East Village · $$$ · 21+
Not ocean sunsets, but the high rooftops catch the last light across the bay and the Coronado bridge. Better for drinks and shared plates than a full dinner.
