Dates and festival hours confirmed; transport details need a final check — checked October 9, 2026

    Which details are ready?

The city lists the 2026 festival schedule, but its linked mobile experience and some transportation material still refer to 2025. We have not treated those older shuttle stops, prices or museum hours as confirmed for 2026.

    Quick answer

    Plan your visit

December Nights runs Friday, December 4, 2026, from 4–10 p.m. and Saturday, December 5, from noon–10 p.m. Admission to the festival is free; budget separately for food and transportation. For a first visit, choose a short route through the central park, one meal and one activity. Check the city's 2026 transportation update before relying on a shuttle or parking location.

    A manageable family evening

Suggested itinerary, not the city's entertainment schedule. On Saturday, an earlier daytime visit is also possible.

Before leaving: choose one arrival route

Save the official event map when the 2026 version is posted. Pick a meeting landmark and a backup return option. Put the same contact number in each child's pocket.

    First stop: orient the group

Find the nearest restroom and your agreed meeting point before joining food lines. Keep the first activity close to your arrival side of the park.

    Dinner: make one food decision

Pick a food area together and allow time to queue. A shared meal stop is easier to manage than sending different family members into separate lines.

After dinner: one activity and a short lights walk

Choose a performance or museum visit only after checking its published hours. Leave time to walk the central promenade without trying to cover every venue.

Leave while the group still has energy

Set a departure target before arrival. Recheck the return service before joining one last line; allow extra time to reach your pickup point.

    Route choices inside the park

Use these as orientation choices; event closures and the official map take precedence.

    Arriving from the west

Build your outing around the Cabrillo Bridge approach and central promenade. Decide how much farther east everyone can comfortably walk before committing to another stop.

    Arriving from the east

Start with the Park Boulevard side of the park and plan a return toward that same side. A simple out-and-back avoids ending far from your ride.

Visiting with a stroller or mobility device

Ask the organizer about accessible arrival, event routes and restrooms. Crowds can make even a paved route slow; choose fewer stops and avoid relying on a tight transfer.

    What to budget and verify

Free admission does not make every part of the evening free.

    Food, drinks and transportation

Set a group spending limit before joining the first vendor queue. Check posted menu prices and any parking or rideshare cost before paying.

    Museum access

Check each participating museum's 2026 hours and admission terms. Festival opening hours are not a promise of free entry to every museum.

    Nearby hotels

Compare the actual walk or transit route, total nightly charges and cancellation terms. A hotel described as near Balboa Park may still require transportation.

Recheck the city website for weather changes, closures and the current accessibility plan.

    Planning note

Do not use last year's shuttle map as a confirmed 2026 plan.
