Pick one stretch of waterfront, then plan dinner and the trip home around it.

Organizer dates and start time confirmed — checked October 9, 2026

A start time is not an arrival time everywhere

5:30 p.m. is the Shelter Island start. Boats reach other viewing areas later. The organizer's route text and intermediate timetable do not fully agree on the Embarcadero/Seaport order, so we are not presenting precise arrival promises for those stops.

    Quick answer

    Plan your visit

The organizer lists Sunday, December 13, and Sunday, December 20, 2026, with a 5:30 p.m. start at Shelter Island. The boats continue around the bay and finish near Coronado Ferry Landing. For a first visit, consider the Embarcadero for a downtown outing, Shelter Island for the start, or Coronado if you are already staying there. Choose one location rather than trying to follow the boats.

Build the evening around one viewpoint

The best choice is the one your group can comfortably reach and leave.

    With young children

Choose an earlier part of the route if bedtime matters. Have dinner first and keep a fallback plan for a cold or tired child. Do not promise a particular boat arrival time.

    With a downtown hotel

Choose a public waterfront viewing area you can reach on foot from dinner. Check the full route back to the hotel rather than relying only on the straight-line distance.

    With a Coronado stay

Make the Ferry Landing area the center of the evening. If you cross the bay, verify the last return sailing and a backup way home before leaving.

    With accessibility needs

Assess curb cuts, surface, distance, crowds and restrooms for the exact viewpoint. Do not assume a waterfront label guarantees a clear seated view. Contact the organizer for event-specific arrangements.

Parking, transit and the return trip

Treat arrival and departure as part of the outing.

    Transit for the downtown waterfront

Check MTS routes, service alerts and the final walk to your chosen area. Save your return connection before you settle in; routes serving downtown do not take you directly to every bay viewpoint.

    Driving

Choose a legal lot serving your viewpoint, check the posted closing time and price, and photograph the location. Do not drive between viewing areas once the parade begins.

    Dinner reservations

Choose dinner near your viewing area and allow time to finish before walking to the water. A restaurant reservation is not a reserved public viewing space.

    Restroom stop

Locate facilities before the procession arrives. Confirm that nearby businesses will still be open; do not count on customer-only restrooms without buying anything.

    A simple viewing plan

These are planning steps, not a guaranteed event timetable.

    Before departure

Check the organizer for changes, choose the date, save the viewpoint and verify your transport home.

    Before the boats arrive

Eat, use the restroom and choose a position that leaves the public path clear. Keep children away from the water's edge.

    During the procession

Stay in your chosen area and enjoy the boats without chasing them. A blanket or warm layer makes a stationary waterfront wait more comfortable.

    Afterward

Let the busiest pedestrian flow clear if your schedule allows. Keep the group together until you reach your return ride.

    What to bring

    Planning note

Check organizer rules before bringing chairs or bulky equipment; leave public paths clear.
