The three essential rides are the Bayshore Bikeway, a roughly 24-mile loop around San Diego Bay linking downtown, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach and Coronado, largely on protected path; the Mission Bay loop, a flat, mostly car-free circuit of about 12 miles that's the best family ride in the city; and Coast Highway 101 from Oceanside south through Carlsbad, Encinitas and Del Mar, the classic North County coastal ride with real bike lanes and a lot of coffee stops. The San Diego River Trail runs inland from the ocean through Mission Valley, and Mission Trails and Black Mountain cover the off-road side. Rentals are easy in Mission Beach, Coronado and downtown, and shared e-bikes are widely available in the urban core.

San Diego Bay
The county's signature ride — a roughly 24-mile loop around the bay connecting downtown, National City, Chula Vista, Imperial Beach, the Silver Strand and Coronado. Much of it is protected class-I path, and you can shortcut the loop by taking the Coronado ferry back to downtown.
Local tip: Ride it counterclockwise and finish with the ferry from Coronado to downtown. It turns a long loop into a great afternoon.
Mission Bay
About 12 flat, mostly car-free miles around the bay, past Fiesta Island, Crown Point and De Anza Cove. The single best family ride in San Diego and a good first ride for anyone rusty.
North County coastal
Oceanside through Carlsbad, Encinitas, Cardiff, Solana Beach and Del Mar — roughly 25 miles of coastal riding with bike lanes, ocean views and an unreasonable density of coffee shops. The definitive North County ride.
Ocean Beach to inland
Follows the river from the ocean through Mission Valley toward Santee. The finished segments are excellent and flat; the trail still has gaps where you're routed onto streets.
La Jolla / Del Mar
The local proving ground. A short, steep climb up from the beach that every serious San Diego cyclist has an opinion about. Traffic is fast — ride it with confidence or not at all.
East of Mission Valley
The closest real mountain biking to the city, with a network of trails ranging from smooth fire road to genuinely technical singletrack.
North city
More mountain biking with a climb to a summit view over the northern county. Hot and exposed in summer.
Coronado
Flat, quiet, and built for cruisers. Rent a beach cruiser at the ferry landing and ride the loop past the Hotel del and along the Strand.
Mission Beach and Pacific Beach for boardwalk cruisers, Coronado at the ferry landing, and downtown for road and e-bikes. Shared e-bikes and scooters are dense throughout the urban core.
California classifies e-bikes into three classes with different rules about throttles, speed and where they can ride, and some paths and beach boardwalks restrict or prohibit them. Check the specific path's signage.
The Mission Beach and Pacific Beach boardwalks have posted low speed limits and are heavily enforced in summer. They're a place to cruise, not to train.

The Trolley and Coaster both accommodate bikes, which makes point-to-point rides workable — ride the coast north and take the Coaster back.
