Poway is the best hiking base in inland San Diego County because it stacks three very different trail systems within ten minutes of each other. For summits, Mt. Woodson to Potato Chip Rock is the famous one at about 7.5 miles round trip from Lake Poway, and Iron Mountain is the local favorite at roughly 5.5 to 6 miles round trip with a genuine 360-degree view. For shade — rare in San Diego — Blue Sky Ecological Reserve runs a cool oak and sycamore canyon that stays comfortable when everything else is baking, and it connects up to Lake Poway if you want to extend. For an easy outing, the Lake Poway shoreline loop is about three miles of rolling water views. Sycamore Canyon and Goodan Ranch to the south add wide open backcountry mileage with almost no crowds. All of these are inland trails: they run 10 to 20 degrees hotter than the coast, they have limited shade outside Blue Sky, and summer means starting at dawn.

The iconic one. Long, exposed, boulder-strewn, and busy — worth doing once at sunrise and then mostly avoided on weekends. From Lake Poway it's about 7.5 miles round trip with 2,000 feet of gain.
Local tip: The Highway 67 approach from Ramona is about 6 miles on pavement with free parking if the lake lot is full.
Poway's everyday summit and arguably the better hike. Roughly 5.5 to 6 miles round trip from the free lot at Poway Road and Highway 67, with switchbacks, a shaded oak stretch at the start, and a wide view from the top. It's popular but never Woodson-crowded.
A longer variation from the Ellie Lane trailhead that turns Iron Mountain into a proper 8-mile day through boulder fields and seasonal wildflowers.
The rare cool hike in inland San Diego. A wide dirt road runs up a shaded oak and sycamore canyon; you can turn around anywhere, climb to Lake Poway, or push to Ramona Dam. Free parking on Espola Road, and it's a genuinely good option with kids or in summer.
Local tip: Guided nature walks run on weekends and the canyon floor is stroller-tolerant for the first mile.

A big open preserve south of Poway with wide fire roads, seasonal creek crossings, and very few people. Best after winter rain when the canyon greens up.
Twenty minutes east, flat wide-open grassland with raptors overhead — the antidote to a climbing day.
