Where to catch your ride
Terminal 1 & 2 – Transportation Plaza (cross skybridge, ride pickup on top deck)
All rideshare pickups (Uber, Lyft, Waymo) happen at the Transportation Plazas — cross the pedestrian skybridge from Terminal 1 or 2 to the parking structure and take the elevator to the top level.
The route
Exit airport → N Harbor Dr → left on Grape St or continue to Broadway → arrive Gaslamp in 3.2 miles. No freeway needed.
Watch rush hour: 7–9 AM and 4–7 PM (weekdays)
Insider tips
- Take Uber, not a taxi — SAN taxis have a $20 flat rate to downtown but rideshare is often cheaper and comes faster.
- The MTS Route 992 bus runs every 15 min from both terminals to the Santa Fe Depot (Trolley + Amtrak) for $2.50 — 15 min ride, then a 5-minute walk into Gaslamp.
- Skip car rentals if you're staying in Gaslamp — Uber, the Trolley, and walking cover 90% of a downtown trip.
- Return trip: allow 40 min door-to-security during the 7–9 AM peak; 25 min midday.
Where to eat and settle in after landing in the Gaslamp
If you arrive before hotel check-in, keep the first stop simple. Little Italy is a short rideshare north of the airport and has coffee, pastries, and an easy waterfront walk; the Gaslamp itself is better for a later dinner when the evening crowds arrive. For a quick meal, look for a counter-service taco, ramen, or sandwich spot rather than carrying luggage into a reservation-only dining room.
The Gaslamp is compact once you arrive, but blocks vary in noise and late-night activity. Ask your hotel about luggage storage, walk to Petco Park or the waterfront after dropping bags, and save a longer meal for a reservation. If your flight lands late, confirm the kitchen's closing time and use rideshare rather than planning a transfer to another neighborhood.
