With two days, split the city into one inland day and one coastal day. Day one: Balboa Park in the morning (pick two museums, not five), lunch in Little Italy, the USS Midway or the waterfront in the afternoon, dinner and a walk in the Gaslamp Quarter. Day two: La Jolla Cove and the sea lions early, brunch in La Jolla village, La Jolla Shores or Windansea in the afternoon, and sunset at Sunset Cliffs before dinner in Ocean Beach or Point Loma. Skip SeaWorld and the Safari Park on a two-day trip — either one eats an entire day. Stay downtown or in La Jolla to minimize driving, and expect 20–30 minutes between neighborhoods outside rush hour.

Balboa Park · Free to enter · Museums ticketed
Park in one of the free lots, walk El Prado, and choose two museums at most — the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Us are the usual pair, or the Air & Space Museum if you have kids. The Botanical Building and the koi pond cost nothing.
Local tip: Free parking fills by about 10:30am on weekends; the free tram loops the park if you end up in an outer lot.
Little Italy · 10 minutes from Balboa Park
Lunch on India Street, then the Piazza della Famiglia. On a Saturday the Little Italy Mercato farmers market takes over several blocks and is worth planning the day around.
Downtown waterfront · Midway: 2.5–3 hours
The Midway is the single best paid attraction downtown, with the flight deck and the included audio tour. If a museum feels like too much, walk the Embarcadero to Seaport Village instead and take a harbor cruise.
Gaslamp · Walkable
Dinner in the Gaslamp and a drink on a rooftop. If the Padres are home, a night game at Petco Park is a better use of the evening than any restaurant.
Early start in La Jolla buys you free parking and no crowds.
La Jolla · Free street parking if you're early
Sea lions and seals haul out on the rocks at the Cove and Children's Pool. Before 9am you'll find free street parking and have the bluff path largely to yourself.
Local tip: Keep well back from the animals — they're wild, protected, and faster on land than they look.
La Jolla · Walkable from the Cove
Girard and Prospect have the brunch spots and the ocean-view tables. Then walk the shops or head straight for the sand.
La Jolla · Pick one
La Jolla Shores for swimming, kayaking to the sea caves and a paid lot; Windansea for the photogenic reef and free street parking with no facilities.
Point Loma · Free · Arrive an hour before sunset
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the best free sunset in the city. Afterwards, Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach has the casual dinner and the least pretentious bar scene in San Diego.
Two days can't hold everything. These are the honest trade-offs.
Escondido · 45+ minutes each way
Wonderful, and a full day plus a long drive. Save it for a three-day trip or longer.
Balboa Park · The Zoo is a 5–6 hour commitment
The San Diego Zoo realistically eats most of a day. If it's the reason you came, swap it in for the whole of day one and move Balboa Park's museums to the afternoon of day two.
Mission Bay / Carlsbad · Full-day parks
Both are all-day parks with all-day pricing. They don't fit into a two-day first visit without gutting everything else.
Two days is enough for one strong city day and one coastal day. You'll see Balboa Park, downtown, La Jolla and a sunset — but you'll have to choose between the Zoo, SeaWorld and the Safari Park rather than doing more than one.
Balboa Park in the morning, lunch in Little Italy, the USS Midway or the Embarcadero in the afternoon, and dinner in the Gaslamp Quarter — it's all within a few minutes of downtown hotels.
It helps a lot. The trolley serves downtown, Old Town and Mission Valley, but La Jolla, Sunset Cliffs and the beaches are much easier by car or rideshare.
Downtown or the Gaslamp for walkable dinners and quick access to Balboa Park and the waterfront; La Jolla if beaches and the Cove are your priority.
Yes, if you enter the Zoo at opening and leave by mid-afternoon. Head to Mission Beach or Ocean Beach afterwards — both are about 15 minutes from Balboa Park.
