Rideshare estimates are typical off-peak; surge pricing (weekend nights, holidays, rush hour) can add 20–40%.
Where to catch your ride
Terminal 1 & 2 – Transportation Plaza (upper deck)
All rideshare pickups (Uber, Lyft, Waymo) happen at the Transportation Plazas — cross the pedestrian skybridge from Terminal 1 or 2 to the parking structure and take the elevator to the top level.
The route
Exit airport → N Harbor Dr → I-5 S → Exit 14B (Coronado Bridge, CA-75) → onto Coronado. Hotel Del is a straight shot on Orange Ave.
Watch rush hour: 7–9 AM and 4–6 PM (bridge backs up)
Insider tips
- Bridge toll was eliminated in 2002 — no charge to cross.
- Fun option: MTS 992 to the Embarcadero, then the $8 Coronado Ferry to Ferry Landing (15 min, sunset views). Cheaper than a rideshare with two people and part of the trip.
- If you're staying at the Hotel del Coronado or Loews, both offer valet with in-out access — don't rent a car unless you're leaving the island.
- Return trip: allow 45 min from Coronado to SAN during weekday PM rush (bridge queue can add 15 min).
- SAN → Coronado avoids I-5 gridlock in the AM — it's one of the fastest airport transfers in the region.
A low-stress first stop after landing in Coronado
Coronado makes a memorable arrival because the bridge opens onto a walkable island, but luggage changes the calculation. Go directly to your hotel or ask for bag storage before exploring Orange Avenue or the beach. If you arrive early, Ferry Landing has broad views back toward downtown and casual places to eat without requiring a long detour from the transfer route.
The ferry is a scenic alternative for a later downtown outing, not usually the fastest way to reach a hotel from SAN. Once settled, walk the waterfront, check the beach conditions, and plan dinner around Orange Avenue or the Hotel del area. Keep the first afternoon flexible: bridge traffic, check-in timing, and coastal wind can all change the pace.
