Where to catch your ride
Terminal 1 & 2 – Transportation Plaza
All rideshare pickups (Uber, Lyft, Waymo) happen at the Transportation Plazas — cross the pedestrian skybridge from Terminal 1 or 2 to the parking structure and take the elevator to the top level.
The route
Exit airport → I-5 N → 34 miles → Exit 45 (Palomar Airport Rd) for Legoland/Poinsettia hotels or Exit 49 (Carlsbad Village Dr) for the village and beach hotels.
Watch rush hour: 7–10 AM SB / 3:30–7 PM NB (I-5 in North County is the worst rush hour in the county)
Insider tips
- The Coaster is the smart move: MTS 992 to Santa Fe Depot, then the Coaster to Carlsbad Village or Poinsettia for $7.50. Total ~90 min but you avoid $80–$115 in rideshare + guaranteed traffic.
- Uber XL ($125–$165) is worth it for families with car seats and luggage — a lone Uber X with 4 people plus bags won't fit.
- SAN → Carlsbad hits worst traffic between 3:30 PM and 7 PM northbound. If you land then, the Coaster is faster than a car.
- Rent a car at SAN if you're staying 3+ days in Carlsbad — you'll want the wheels for Legoland, the beach, Encinitas, and the flower fields.
- For Legoland stays, Exit 45 (Palomar Airport Rd) is closer than the village exit.
- Return trip: allow 2 hours door-to-security in the PM peak; 75 min off-peak.
Planning your first meal and stop in Carlsbad
Carlsbad is the longest transfer in this guide, so avoid stacking a timed attraction directly after landing. If you are staying near the Village, use the first stop for lunch, coffee, and a short beach walk. If you are near LEGOLAND or Poinsettia, go to the hotel first and ask about luggage storage; the Coaster is useful for travelers with time, but it is not a convenient substitute for a direct ride with bulky bags.
Families can make the arrival day easier by choosing one nearby meal and saving LEGOLAND, the Flower Fields, or a longer beach outing for the next morning. North County restaurants spread out quickly after dark, so check hours and reserve ahead during summer weekends. On the return, leave extra time for I-5 traffic and the airport security line.
