Free shuttles leave from the Transportation Plaza outside baggage claim every few minutes, 24 hours a day, and the ride plus the counter usually costs you 30 to 45 minutes total. Budget roughly $55 to $95 a day for a midsize in summer and $40 to $60 off-season, before the airport concession fee, customer facility charge and taxes that add roughly 25 to 30 percent. If you're staying downtown, in the Gaslamp or in Little Italy for a short trip, skipping the car is usually cheaper once you price hotel parking at $45 to $60 a night.

Follow signs for Rental Cars to the Transportation Plaza outside baggage claim. The shared shuttle serves every rental brand, runs continuously, and takes about five minutes to reach the Rental Car Center on Pacific Highway.
Local tip: The shuttle stop is the same one used by hotel vans — look for the marked rental car bay, not the first bus that pulls up.

Return lanes are signed by brand inside the center. Plan 45 minutes from the return lane to your gate on a normal morning and an hour during summer weekends and holiday travel.
Local tip: Gas stations on Pacific Highway near the center run 30 to 60 cents above neighborhood prices. Fill up in Point Loma or Midway instead.

Two situations where renting downtown or later saves real money.
If your first day is downtown or the Gaslamp, take a rideshare in, walk the first day, and pick up a car from a downtown or Little Italy branch the next morning. You dodge a night of hotel parking and the airport concession fee.
Staying in Pacific Beach, La Jolla Village, Coronado or downtown for two or three nights? Those areas are walkable enough that rideshare for the occasional trip beats a car plus parking.
Local tip: Coronado in particular is a bike town — hotel bike rentals go further than a car does.
North County beaches, Julian, Anza-Borrego, Temecula, the Safari Park, Torrey Pines at sunrise, and any itinerary with more than two neighborhoods a day. Transit does not reach most of them well.
