Carlsbad is one of the last San Diego County beach towns where the parking is mostly free, but the supply is thin. Free angled and parallel street parking runs along Carlsbad Boulevard from the Village south past Tamarack, and there is a free lot at Tamarack Avenue that is the single most contested piece of asphalt in North County on a summer Saturday. South Carlsbad State Beach along the bluffs charges a day-use fee but almost always has room when the free spots are gone. The rule of thumb: arrive before 9:30am for a free spot in summer, before 11am in spring and fall, and any time you like from November through March. If everything on the boulevard is full, park up in Carlsbad Village where the three-hour free spots turn over constantly and walk down.

Angled and parallel spots line the bluff road for miles. No meters, no time limit on most stretches, and a staircase to the sand every few hundred yards.
Local tip: The stretch south of Tamarack turns over less — go north toward the Village for churn.

No. Overnight parking is prohibited along the beach stretches, and the bluff-top areas are patrolled. Overnight beachside stays mean a campsite reservation at South Carlsbad State Beach.
In the Village three-hour spots, then walking down — the turnover there is far higher than anywhere on the boulevard. Late afternoon, they just take whatever opens up as the day crowd leaves.
