Is Pacific Beach or Mission Beach better? Pacific Beach has the bars, restaurants and nightlife; Mission Beach has the boardwalk, Belmont Park and calmer bay-side water for families. They sit next to each other on the same boardwalk, so you can stay in one and walk to the other in about 20 minutes.

Pick Pacific Beach (PB) for restaurants, bars, and a walkable neighborhood beyond the boardwalk. Pick Mission Beach for the classic boardwalk life — Belmont Park, wall-to-wall sand, and a party-adjacent vibe. They share the same 3-mile beach; the difference is what happens 2 blocks inland.
The two neighborhoods are contiguous — the boardwalk connects them. 15 minutes to walk from Belmont Park to Crystal Pier.

PB wins for food, coffee, and staying more than 2 nights. Garnet Ave. has real restaurants, breweries, and grocery — you can actually live there for a week.

Both are safe by day. PB's Garnet corridor gets rowdy Fri-Sat late; Mission Beach is quieter but has more transient traffic near the boardwalk. Neither is genuinely dangerous.
