Should you live in North Park or Hillcrest? North Park is the better pick for breweries, live music and slightly more space per dollar; Hillcrest is denser, more walkable, closer to Balboa Park and the center of San Diego's LGBTQ community. Both are inland neighborhoods about 10-15 minutes from downtown with no beach access.

Hillcrest — you can walk to the Prado in 15 minutes. North Park is a 5-min drive or 20-min walk.
You can survive without one in either — Uber, walk, bike. But visiting La Jolla, Coronado, or the beach is much easier with a rental.
