Chicano Park: The Story Behind the Murals
On April 22, 1970, residents of Barrio Logan physically occupied the land beneath the Coronado Bridge to stop construction of a California Highway Patrol substation. They had been promised a community park during the bridge's construction — instead, the land was reassigned. The 12-day occupation ended with the city granting Barrio Logan its park.
Beginning in 1973, Chicano artists began painting the massive concrete bridge support pillars with murals depicting Aztec mythology, civil rights history, labor leaders, and the spiritual heart of the Chicano movement. Today those 80+ murals form the largest collection of outdoor Chicano artwork in the country, and Chicano Park was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2017.
