What if I'm arriving at SAN airport with 1 day?
SAN is 10 minutes from downtown. Uber to Little Italy for coffee, drop bags at your hotel or a locker service, and start the itinerary at Balboa Park by 9 AM. Fly out same day? Skip Sunset Cliffs and eat dinner in the Gaslamp so you're 10 minutes from the airport.
Zoo or Balboa Park on a 1-day trip?

Can I do San Diego and Tijuana in 1 day?
Not with justice to either. The border crossing back into the US can take 2–4 hours on weekends. If you must, do a morning Tijuana food tour, cross back by 2 PM, and spend the afternoon at Sunset Cliffs.
Best month for a 1-day San Diego visit?
September–October: warm ocean, thin crowds, clear sunsets. May–June bring 'May Gray/June Gloom' marine layer that can flatten the sunset. Winter is fine but sunset is by 5 PM so start earlier.
