Rent a car if you are leaving the city — North County, Julian, Anza-Borrego, the wineries, the mountains. Skip it if you are staying downtown, in Little Italy or on the bay, because hotel parking and meters eat the saving. The rental quote is not the cost: San Diego airport adds a $9 per day Customer Facility Charge for up to five rental days on top of the rate, taxes and fuel, and then you pay to park the car everywhere you stop. City meters are $2.50 an hour, enforced Monday to Saturday 8am to 6pm and until 8pm downtown in the Hospitality Zone and Hillcrest, with a 35-cent card fee. Most downtown hotels charge for parking on top of the room, often more than the car. Ride-hailing avoids all of that but neither Uber nor Lyft publishes fixed San Diego fares, so treat any figure you see as an estimate and check the app for your actual route. The third option beats both for a downtown-only trip: an MTS day pass is $6 and covers the trolley and every bus, including Route 992 from the airport.

When the rental wins
You are travelling with children or kit
Car seats, beach gear, strollers and coolers change the maths fast. Ride-hailing with a car seat in San Diego is possible but not reliably available on demand.
You are staying somewhere with free parking
A hotel that does not charge for parking is what makes a rental cheap. Mission Valley, Kearny Mesa and much of North County still include it.
You are here for more than about five days
The airport facility charge stops after five rental days, and weekly rates usually beat daily ones, so the longer the trip the better a car looks against daily ride-hailing.
When ride-hailing or transit wins
Downtown, Gaslamp, Little Italy or the Embarcadero
Everything in this strip is walkable and parking is the most expensive in the county. A car sits in a garage you paid for.
You are here for a conference
Convention Center parking plus event surcharges makes a rental the worst value week of the year. Walk or take the trolley.
You plan on drinking
North Park, Miramar and the Gaslamp are all better reached without a car you then cannot drive.
You are mostly downtown with one day trip
The cheapest pattern in the city: $6 day passes while you are downtown, and a single rental day when you actually leave.
You are going to the beach on a summer weekend
Mission Beach and Pacific Beach lots fill by mid-morning. Being dropped off is genuinely faster than circling.

Getting to the cars at all
The Rental Car Center is at 3355 Admiral Boland Way, not at the terminal. A free shuttle runs 24 hours — budget the time on the way out and back.
Hotel parking
Parking is a separate nightly charge at most bayfront and downtown hotels, and at some it is the largest add-on on the bill.
Meters and the card fee
Most city meters are $2.50 an hour with a 35-cent charge for paying by card, and the enforced hours vary by district.
Fuel and the one-way trap
Prepaid fuel is almost always worse value than filling up yourself before you return the car, and one-way drops to LA or Orange County carry their own fees.
