San Diego Hotel Resort Fees, Parking & What a Night Really Costs

A $299 room can bill out near $400 once the resort fee and parking land. Here is the arithmetic, hotel by hotel.

    Last updated

    Quick answer

San Diego resort and destination fees run roughly $35–70 per night at resort properties, and self-parking is usually charged separately at about $45–55 downtown and at the bay resorts, with valet higher again. That means the number you see on a booking site is often $80–120 a night below what you actually pay before tax. City of San Diego lodging tax adds another 11.75%–13.75% of the room rate depending on zone, and Coronado and Del Mar set their own rates. The table below shows each hotel's verified fee, its parking charge, the two added together, and the resulting real nightly cost — sortable, with the source and check date on every row. Where a property does not publish a figure, the row says 'not confirmed' rather than guessing.

Room rates are typical ranges, not quotes. City of San Diego lodging tax runs 11.75% to 13.75% by zone under Measure C, plus the tourism district assessment, so the tax column is a range and is only shown for hotels inside the city — Coronado, Del Mar and North County set their own rates. Fees change without notice; confirm both the fee and parking on the property's own site before booking.

How to read a San Diego hotel quote

The fees are disclosed, but they surface at the last checkout step, which is exactly where people stop comparing. Two habits fix it.

    Compare totals, never nightly rates

Take each candidate through to the final payment screen and compare the all-in figure for your dates. Two hotels 20 dollars apart on the rate can be 100 dollars apart on the night.

Price parking as a separate decision

Parking is the single biggest swing. If your plan is walkable or trolley-based, a hotel with paid parking you never use costs nothing extra; if you are driving to the zoo and the beach daily, free self-parking can be worth more than a better room.

Ask what the fee actually includes

Resort fees usually bundle Wi-Fi, pool towels, the fitness centre and sometimes beach gear or bikes. It is only worth something if you would have paid for those items — and hotels charging no fee generally include the same three anyway.

Watch for the fee to change between booking and arrival

Properties revise these amounts without notice, and third-party listings lag badly. The hotel's own fees or policies page is the only figure worth trusting on the day you book.

    Where the fees cluster

Geography predicts the bill more reliably than brand does.

    Coronado and Mission Bay resorts

The highest combined add-ons in the county: a resort fee plus paid parking on essentially every property, often totalling near $100 a night on top of the room.

    Downtown and the bayfront

Fees are less universal, but parking is expensive and valet-only garages are common. A downtown stay without a car is often the cheapest real cost in the city.

    Frequently asked

How much are resort fees in San Diego?

Verified fees at major San Diego resorts run about $42–70 per night, with $46–50 the most common band at the Mission Bay and Coronado properties. Parking is charged separately, usually $45–55 for self-parking.

Are resort fees mandatory in San Diego?

Yes, where a property charges one. It is a condition of the stay rather than an optional service, and it applies whether or not you use the amenities it covers. It must be disclosed before you pay, which is why it appears at the final checkout step.

Can you get a resort fee waived?

Occasionally, through elite status at chains that waive destination fees on award stays, or as a goodwill gesture when an amenity the fee covers is closed. Asking at check-in about a closed pool or spa is legitimate; assuming a waiver is not.

What is the hotel tax in San Diego?

The City of San Diego charges a transient occupancy tax of 11.75%, 12.75% or 13.75% of the room rate depending on the zone the hotel sits in, following Measure C, and most hotels add a tourism district assessment on top. Coronado, Del Mar and the North County cities set their own rates.

    Do resort fees get taxed?

Treatment varies by property and line item, so the totals on this page are shown before tax, with the city's room-rate tax range noted separately rather than folded in.
