The Perfect 3-Day San Diego Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

San Diego is deceptively spread out. Without a plan, first-timers burn half their trip in traffic between Mission Beach and Balboa Park. This itinerary clusters activities by neighborhood so you maximize beach time and minimize driving.
Day 1 — La Jolla & North Coast
Morning: Coffee at Bird Rock Coffee Roasters, then snorkel or kayak the La Jolla sea caves (book in advance — Everyday California is reliable).
Afternoon: Lunch at Galaxy Taco in La Jolla Shores, then the Torrey Pines hike (Beach Trail, 1.5 miles, easy).
Evening: Sunset at Windansea, dinner at Catania or casual fish tacos at Oscar's Mexican Seafood.
Day 2 — Balboa Park, Downtown & Coronado
Morning: Balboa Park. Pick two museums max (the Museum of Us and the San Diego Museum of Art are local favorites) and don't miss the Botanical Building.
Afternoon: Drive to Coronado, take a long beach walk, and have lunch at Clayton's Coffee Shop for a classic diner moment.
Evening: Cocktails on the rooftop at the Pendry Hotel in the Gaslamp, then dinner at Born & Raised or Cesarina (Italian, Point Loma — book a week ahead).
Day 3 — North Park, Breweries & Sunset Cliffs
Morning: Brunch at Communal Coffee or Morning Glory in Little Italy.
Afternoon: Brewery crawl in North Park — start at Mike Hess, walk to North Park Beer Co., end at Pure Project. Tacos at Lucha Libre between stops.
Evening: Drive to Sunset Cliffs for the final golden hour, then dinner at Liberty Public Market (food hall, low-pressure, perfect last night).
Where to stay
First-timers should pick La Jolla (most beautiful, most expensive), Little Italy (walkable, foodie heaven), or Mission Beach (toes-in-sand vibes, family-friendly). Skip downtown unless you specifically want nightlife.
