10 Best Sunset Spots in La Jolla (From a Local)

La Jolla is arguably the best square mile in San Diego for sunsets. The coastline faces almost due west, the cliffs rise dramatically out of the Pacific, and there's a different vantage point every few hundred feet. After living here for years, here are the 10 spots I keep coming back to — ranked, with the best time to arrive and what to bring.

1. Windansea Beach

Windansea is the surfer-photographer's dream sunset. The iconic palm-thatched surf shack sits on the sand and frames the horizon perfectly. Arrive 45 minutes before official sunset to claim a flat sandstone ledge on the north end. Bring a wide lens and a hoodie — the wind picks up fast once the sun drops.

2. Hospitals Reef (Whispering Sands)

Just north of Windansea, this small pocket beach is where locals go when Windansea fills up. Tide pools light up gold in the last 20 minutes of light. Park on Palomar Ave and take the staircase down.

3. La Jolla Cove

Yes, it's touristy. Yes, it smells like sea lions. But the cove still delivers — especially from the grass at Scripps Park, where you get the sunset behind the rocks and the silhouettes of paddleboarders gliding home.

4. Mount Soledad
