How locals read this page
San Diego days go sideways for predictable reasons: a marine layer that never burns off at the coast, a swell that turns a family beach into shorebreak, a minus tide that only lasts ninety minutes, or a two-hour northbound line after a day in Tijuana. Every panel above answers one of those questions with a live public feed rather than a guess.
A workable order of operations for a beach morning: check the tide row first to see whether the sand is wide or pinched, glance at the wave height and period (anything over 4 ft at a short period means messy, closed-out surf), then open a camera near the beach you had in mind to confirm the sky. If the coast is grey, Balboa Park, the inland valleys and East County are usually ten to fifteen degrees warmer and clear.
For an evening out, scan today's event list, then use the tonight page to fill the gaps around it. For a cross-border day trip, compare San Ysidro and Otay Mesa before you head south — the faster crossing at 9 AM is rarely the faster crossing at 7 PM.
Sources: NOAA CO-OPS station 9410170 for tides, Open-Meteo marine and forecast models for surf, wind and water temperature, U.S. Customs and Border Protection for crossing waits, and camera operators for each live feed. Live readings are for planning only — obey lifeguards, posted closures, marine warnings, and border agents.
San Diego conditions FAQ
What are the conditions in San Diego right now?
This page reads live public feeds every time you load it: NOAA tide predictions for San Diego Bay, Open-Meteo marine and weather readings for the open coast, CBP northbound border wait times, and today's confirmed events from our own calendar.
How often does this dashboard update?
Tides, surf, and border waits are fetched fresh on each visit; border numbers come straight from CBP and typically change every 10–20 minutes. Today's event list refreshes every five minutes and is bound to the current Pacific date.
Which beach do these surf numbers describe?
The marine reading is taken off the La Jolla / Pacific Beach stretch of open coast, which is a fair proxy for most west-facing county beaches. South-facing beaches like Coronado and sheltered spots inside Mission Bay usually run smaller.
Should I trust the border wait times exactly?
Treat them as a comparison tool, not a promise. They tell you which crossing and which lane is moving best right now; actual time in line depends on when you arrive and how staffing changes.
More live utilities
Weather changes fast between the coast and East County — a clear inland forecast does not mean a clear beach.
