The Zoo opens at 9am year-round and closes earlier in winter than in summer; check the official hours page for your date before planning a late afternoon.
Parking
The main Zoo lot off Park Boulevard is free and large, but fills from mid-morning on weekends and holidays. Arriving before 9:30am usually means a spot near the entrance; later arrivals park at the far end or in Balboa Park's Inspiration Point lot and take the free park tram.

- Animals are visibly more active in the first two hours after opening, and the zoo's hills are far less punishing before the afternoon heat. Ride the Kangaroo Bus to the far end first, then walk back downhill toward the entrance.
