Family San Diego
Age-by-age guide for visiting the San Diego Zoo with children: strollers, best exhibits, panda reservations, and a realistic family itinerary.

The San Diego Zoo is excellent with kids, but the hills are steeper than most zoos. Bring a stroller, arrive at opening, prioritize Wildlife Explorers Basecamp and Panda Ridge, and leave by mid-afternoon before everyone melts down.
If the Zoo is a priority, stay near downtown or Hillcrest. Both are 10 minutes from Balboa Park and make it easy to arrive early. See our family hotel picks.
Yes. It's one of the best zoos in the world for kids, with stroller-friendly paths, a dedicated kids' zone, interactive exhibits, and the famous pandas. The hills are the only challenge for small children.
The reservation is free for everyone, not just kids. You can book a same-day timed entry on the Zoo app after entering. Book immediately if visiting on a weekend or holiday.
Ages 5 to 12 are the sweet spot. Toddlers enjoy it too, but you'll need a stroller and shorter loops. Teenagers may prefer the Safari Park for a safari-style experience.
Yes, and you should. The Zoo covers 100 acres with steep hills. Stroller rentals are available near the entrance if you don't bring one.
Plan 4–5 hours for kids. A full 6-hour day is possible with breaks, but most kids hit their limit around hour 4.
