Ride the Pacific Surfliner or COASTER to Santa Fe Depot downtown and stay within walking distance: Little Italy, the Marina District or the downtown core. That gives you the trolley, the waterfront and restaurants on foot. Old Town is a good second choice, with trolley, COASTER and Surfliner at one station. For a beach weekend, get off at a coastal station such as Oceanside, Carlsbad Village, Encinitas or Solana Beach and stay nearby. Check schedules and fares on the official Amtrak, NCTD and MTS sites; they change.
