How locals plan Labor Day Weekend
Warmest water of the year
Early September ocean temps run 68–72°F — the one weekend most locals swim without a wetsuit. La Jolla Shores and Mission Beach are the easiest entries; Coronado has the calmest surf for kids.
Del Mar closing weekend
The Del Mar racing season traditionally wraps on Labor Day. Gates open late morning, the infield is the cheap ticket, and the Coaster from downtown drops you a short walk from the track — far better than the parking line.
Leave the coast before 2 PM or after 7 PM
I-5 north and I-8 west are the worst stretches Saturday and Monday afternoons. Beach lots in Mission Beach, PB and Coronado are full before 9 AM all three days.
No alcohol on city beaches
It's still banned on San Diego city beaches, boardwalks and most bay parks, and enforcement is heavy on holiday weekends. Mission Bay's designated areas and licensed bayfront patios are the legal options.

Yes — it's one of the three busiest weekends of the year with Memorial Day and July 4th. Hotel rates in Mission Bay and Coronado peak, restaurants book out for Saturday night, and coastal traffic backs up from late morning to evening.
Is the water warm enough to swim on Labor Day?
Yes. Early September is the warmest ocean of the year in San Diego, usually 68–72°F, and most people swim comfortably without a wetsuit.
What is open on Labor Day in San Diego?
Beaches, Balboa Park, the Zoo, SeaWorld and most restaurants operate normal or extended hours. Banks, post offices, city offices and schools are closed, and street sweeping is suspended.
