Wide sandy beach at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas with families and volleyball nets under a blue sky

    Moonlight Beach, Encinitas

North County's most family-friendly beach: real restrooms, real lifeguards, fire pits and a snack bar.

    Last updated

    Quick answer

Moonlight State Beach sits at the bottom of B Street in downtown Encinitas and is the easiest full-service beach day in North County. It has a paid lot at the sand, free street parking on the bluff above, staffed lifeguard towers in season, restrooms with showers, a playground, sand volleyball courts, a snack bar and roughly a dozen first-come fire pits. Arrive before 10am on a summer weekend for the lot and before 3pm if you want a fire pit — they're claimed for the evening well before sunset. Downtown Encinitas restaurants are a five-minute walk uphill, which is what separates Moonlight from most San Diego beaches.

    Parking

There is an actual lot here, which is rarer than it should be.

    The beach lot

Encinitas · Paid · Fills first

A modest lot right at the sand at the base of B Street. It turns over steadily in the morning and then locks up entirely from late morning through afternoon in summer. Rates are posted at the kiosk and change seasonally.

Local tip: Before 9:30am on a July Saturday you'll get a space. After 10:30am, go straight to the bluff.

Free street parking on the bluff

Encinitas · Free · 3–8 minute walk down

Third Street, B Street and the residential blocks above the beach are free and usually have space even on busy days. The walk down is short; the walk back up with a cooler is the price you pay.

    Fire pits and evening plans

Moonlight is one of the few beaches where a bonfire is easy to pull off.

    The fire rings

Moonlight Beach · Free · First come, first served

Concrete rings sit along the north end of the sand. You cannot reserve them. Groups arrive in the early afternoon, park a cooler and a blanket at a ring and hold it until dark.

Local tip: Only clean wood or charcoal — no pallets, no trash, and haul the ash out or leave it cold in the ring.

    Sunset timing

    Moonlight Beach · Free

The beach faces west with no obstruction, so sunset is clean year-round. In summer the marine layer often clears by late afternoon, which makes 6–8pm the best window of the day here.

    With kids

The reason North County families default to Moonlight.

    Playground and grass area

    Moonlight Beach · Free

There's a shaded playground and a grassy strip above the sand, so small kids have somewhere to go when they're done with the water. Picnic tables sit alongside it.

    Lifeguards and swim conditions

Moonlight Beach · Seasonal staffed towers

Towers are staffed daily through summer and on weekends in the shoulder seasons. The bottom is sandy with a mild shore break most days — much friendlier than the reef beaches to the south.

    Snack bar and rentals

    Moonlight Beach · Seasonal hours

A seasonal snack bar handles the emergency ice cream, and surf schools run beginner lessons off this stretch of sand most summer mornings.

    Rules worth knowing

    • • No alcohol on the sand — Encinitas enforces it.
    • • No glass containers anywhere on the beach.
    • • Dogs are not allowed on Moonlight Beach; nearby Cardiff and Del Mar have dog-friendly stretches with their own rules.
    • • Fires must be inside the rings and out before you leave.
    • • Restrooms and showers close at night with the beach.

    Frequently asked
