How locals plan MLK Weekend
The parade closes downtown streets
San Diego's MLK Day parade runs through downtown on the Sunday of the weekend. Harbor Drive and several downtown blocks close for the morning — take the trolley to Seaport Village or Gaslamp instead of driving.
Day of service events fill early
Volunteer projects across the county post signups in early January and close once full. Sign up before the week of the holiday.
Quietest weekend at the Zoo and Safari Park
January is the lowest-attendance month of the year at the big attractions. Animals are active in the cool weather and lines are short.
