San Diego With Kids: A Local Parent's Weekend Guide

Visiting San Diego with kids almost always means three suggestions: the Zoo, SeaWorld, and Legoland. They're great. They're also expensive and exhausting. Here's the local parent's version of a perfect weekend that mixes the iconic with the underrated.
Friday afternoon — Mission Bay
Drop bags and head straight to Mission Bay. The flat, calm water at Bonita Cove is perfect for toddlers, and Fanuel Park has a playground 30 feet from the sand. Rent a kayak or pedal boat from Mission Bay Sportcenter for an hour. Dinner: tacos at South Beach Bar & Grille in OB or pizza at Woodstock's in PB.
Saturday — Balboa Park & New Children's Museum
Morning at Balboa Park: pick the Fleet Science Center (interactive everything) and the Spanish Village Art Center (kids can watch artists work in tiny studios). Lunch at Panama 66, the museum café with a giant sculpture-garden lawn for kids to run around on.
Afternoon at the New Children's Museum downtown — three floors of wildly creative installations designed for kids to climb on, paint on, and crawl through. Way better than it sounds.
Dinner: Liberty Public Market (food hall, low pressure, something for everyone).
Sunday — La Jolla & Birch Aquarium
Start at La Jolla Shores. Build a sandcastle, walk to the Cove and watch the sea lions from the railing. Lunch at Galaxy Taco. Afternoon at the Birch Aquarium — the shark touch tank and kelp forest exhibit are kid favorites. Sunset back at the Shores.
If you have a fourth day
Coronado for the day. Take the ferry, walk the beach, ride bikes around the island, and lunch at Clayton's Coffee Shop. Or do Legoland — but only if your kids are 4–10. Older or younger and it's a long hot day.
Tips from a local parent
Always pack a hoodie — even in summer, the marine layer kicks in by 7pm.
The San Diego Zoo opens at 9am. Get there at opening and ride the bus tour first to map your day.
Bring snacks and refillable water bottles. Theme park food is brutal.
Library cards (even non-resident ones) get free or discounted entry to several museums on rotating Tuesdays.
