Poway is built for families, and most of the good stuff is free. The anchor outing is Old Poway Park on a Saturday morning: a volunteer-run steam train and trolley for a couple of dollars a ride, a working blacksmith shop, the farmers market, and breakfast at Hamburger Factory next to the tracks. Lake Poway adds a playground, picnic ramadas, an easy three-mile shoreline loop, pedal boats, and seasonal kids' fishing. Blue Sky Ecological Reserve is the shaded, stroller-tolerant nature walk for hot days. The city runs a strong parks and recreation program — community pool swim lessons, youth sports leagues, and camps — plus neighborhood parks with modern playgrounds. For rainy or triple-digit days, the backups are bowling, indoor play and trampoline centers, the library's kids programming, and a 15-minute drive to Rancho Bernardo or Miramar for larger indoor attractions. Almost nothing here requires a reservation and parking is free outside the lake's weekend fee.
