San Diego's surf shops sort into four coastal clusters. Pacific Beach and Mission Beach have the most rental-focused shops, with the shortest walk to beginner-friendly beach break and the cheapest daily board-and-wetsuit packages. Ocean Beach mixes core local shops with used-board racks, and it's the best value area for a first board. La Jolla shops center on La Jolla Shores, which is the county's main beginner spot, so rentals and lessons dominate there. Encinitas, Cardiff and Leucadia along Coast Highway 101 are where the shaper-and-core-shop culture lives — this is where to go for a custom board, a serious quiver conversation or a high-end wetsuit. Expect roughly $25 to $50 a day for a soft-top and wetsuit rental, $400 to $700 for a decent new beginner soft-top or used shortboard, $700 to $1,200-plus for a new custom, and $50 to $150 for typical ding repair with a two-to-seven-day turnaround. Water here runs about 58 to 68 degrees through the year, so plan on a 3/2 wetsuit most of the time and a 4/3 in winter.

Match the errand to the coastline.
Rent in the town you plan to surf, not near your hotel. Pacific Beach, Mission Beach and La Jolla Shores shops are steps from beginner-friendly sand-bottom breaks, and most bundle a board, a wetsuit and sometimes a roof rack for a flat daily rate.
Start with a soft-top in the 8-foot range or a used mid-length. Ocean Beach and Oceanside carry the deepest used racks, and buying used means the inevitable first dings cost you nothing emotionally.
The Encinitas-to-Leucadia stretch of Coast Highway 101 is shaper country. Expect a conversation about your height, weight, home break and skill level, and a lead time measured in weeks, not days.
Nearly every core shop takes repairs or hands them to a local glasser. Typical cost is $50 to $150 depending on severity, with turnaround from two days to a week — faster in winter, slower after a big south swell.
A 3/2 covers most of the San Diego year; add a 4/3 or a hooded top for January through March. Try it on in the shop — a suit that's loose in the lower back will flush cold water all session.

A big south swell turns a beginner day into a beating. Shops will tell you honestly if the day is wrong for your level — ask before you pay.
Many rental shops include soft racks. Coastal lots in PB, OB and La Jolla Shores fill by mid-morning on summer weekends, so go early or plan on a walk.
Most beach lots have showers. Rinsing a rental wetsuit is polite, and rinsing your own is the difference between two seasons and five.
