Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
The name is not marketing. West-facing sandstone bluffs above open ocean, and the single most reliable sunset in the city. Arrive early for parking, stay behind fencing — the cliff edges undercut and collapse.

Roughly when the sun drops each month, why the marine layer sometimes steals it, and the spots that earn the drive.

San Diego sits far enough south that sunset times swing less across the year than most of the country, but the swing still matters for planning: the earliest sunsets of the year come in early December at roughly 4:45pm, and the latest come in late June at roughly 8:00pm, with daylight saving time doing most of the visible work in March and November. Practical planning rule: arrive 30 minutes before the listed sunset time and stay 20 minutes after. Golden hour — the warm, low light photographers want — is the half hour or so before the sun touches the horizon, and the best color of the whole evening frequently arrives ten to twenty minutes after the sun has technically set, when high clouds light up from below. The variable that ruins more San Diego sunsets than anything else is the marine layer: in May and June especially, a bank of low coastal cloud can sit right on the horizon and simply absorb the sun before it reaches the water. Counterintuitively, a partly cloudy sky produces far better sunsets than a perfectly clear one, because clouds are what catch the color. All times here are approximate and vary by a few minutes across the county — verify the exact minute for your date with a sunrise-sunset calculator or weather app before timing a proposal around it.
| Month | Approximate sunset | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| January | ~4:55 – 5:20pm | Early and cold-ish; crisp air often gives the clearest horizon of the year |
| February | ~5:20 – 5:45pm | Winter clarity continues; good whale-watching light |
| March | ~5:45pm, then ~6:55pm after the DST change | The clock jump in early March moves sunset an hour later overnight |
| April | ~7:10 – 7:30pm | One of the best months — long light, marine layer not yet dominant |
| May | ~7:30 – 7:50pm | May Gray: the marine layer frequently swallows the horizon |
| June | ~7:55 – 8:00pm | Latest sunsets of the year, and June Gloom at its most reliable |
| July | ~7:50 – 8:00pm | Clearing improves through the month; peak crowds at every viewpoint |
| August | ~7:25 – 7:50pm | Often the best combination of clear evenings and warm sand |
| September | ~6:45 – 7:20pm | Warmest water, clearest skies, and sunset back at a civilized hour |
| October | ~6:10 – 6:40pm | Santa Ana conditions can produce the most dramatic color of the year |
| November | ~4:45 – 5:00pm after the DST change | The clock falls back in early November and evenings suddenly end early |
| December | ~4:45 – 4:55pm | Earliest sunsets of the year, in the weeks around the solstice |

Long unobstructed western horizon with a working-beach-town atmosphere and a fire ring culture that carries the evening past dark.
Sunset over the cove with sea lions barking in the background. Crowded, but the grass park makes it easy with kids or a picnic.
The bluffs glow orange as the light goes low. Check the tide before walking north along the sand so you are not cut off on the way back.
The widest sand in the county, the Hotel del silhouette, and glittering mica in the sand catching the last light.
A 360-degree option when you want the city, the bay and the ocean in the same frame rather than a horizon-level view.
Spectacular light over the bay and the harbor entrance — but the gate closes before sunset for much of the year, so verify closing time before driving out.
A harbor cruise turns sunset into the event rather than the backdrop.
Parking at Sunset Cliffs, La Jolla Cove and Coronado is the constraint, not the sun. Thirty minutes buys you a space and the golden hour light.
The best color routinely arrives after the sun disappears, when high clouds light from underneath. Most people leave before the actual show.
A low cloud bank on the western horizon means the sun vanishes early with no color. In May and June this is the default rather than the exception.
A completely clear sky gives you a clean disappearance and little color. Scattered high cloud is what produces the photographs.
Sunset jumps roughly an hour later in early March and roughly an hour earlier in early November. Both catch locals off guard for about a week.
Times on this page are approximate and shift by a few minutes across the county and within each month. Check a sunrise-sunset calculator or your weather app for the precise time on your date.
If you want the view with a table, book the reservation for roughly 45 minutes before sunset rather than at it.
It ranges from roughly 4:45pm in early December to roughly 8:00pm in late June. Times shift about an hour overnight at each daylight saving change in March and November. Check a sunrise-sunset calculator for the exact minute on your date.
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park is the most reliable — west-facing bluffs directly above open ocean. La Jolla Cove, Ocean Beach Pier, Coronado and Torrey Pines State Beach are all excellent alternatives with different atmospheres.
The marine layer. A bank of low coastal cloud frequently sits on the western horizon in May and June — the May Gray and June Gloom pattern — and absorbs the sun before it reaches the water.
Thirty minutes before the listed sunset time at minimum, and more on a summer weekend. Parking, not the light, is the limiting factor.
September and October generally combine clear skies, warm evenings and dramatic color, especially during Santa Ana conditions. April is the best of spring before the marine layer settles in.
