Graduation weekends in San Diego cluster in May and June across UC San Diego in La Jolla, San Diego State in the College Area, the University of San Diego in Linda Vista, Point Loma Nazarene and the high schools. Hotels near each campus sell out and raise rates months ahead, so book lodging as soon as the ceremony date is announced — typically four to six months out — and make the group dinner reservation at the same time, because the good tables for parties of eight or more disappear first. Stay near the campus rather than downtown if the ceremony is early: UCSD graduations mean La Jolla and UTC hotels, SDSU means Mission Valley, and USD means Old Town or Mission Valley. Budget an hour for campus parking on ceremony morning, and expect a marine-layer grey start in May and June.

Campus-adjacent hotels sell out first and price accordingly. Book refundable rates the week the ceremony date is published and adjust later if plans change.
Local tip: If nothing is left near campus, Mission Valley is the central fallback with a large room supply and freeway access in every direction.
Citywide · Parties of 8+ book out first
Restaurants take large-party bookings for graduation weekends months ahead, and many require a set menu or a deposit above a certain headcount. Reserve the same week you book the hotel.
Campus · Allow an hour
Campus lots fill long before the ceremony starts and shuttles run from overflow lots. Check the university's commencement page for the parking map and get there earlier than the guidance suggests.
Coast · Make a weekend of it
Most families stay two or three nights. Add a coastal afternoon, a harbor cruise or a brunch the morning after so the trip isn't just the ceremony.
Large parties need planning, not luck.
La Jolla · Ocean-view tables book first
Prospect Street's ocean-view restaurants are the classic post-ceremony choice and are fully committed on graduation weekends by early spring.
Downtown · Best large-party inventory
Downtown has the deepest supply of restaurants that can genuinely seat 10–20 people, plus private rooms if you'd rather not shout across a long table.
Beach neighborhoods · Often cheaper for 15+
For a large family, a vacation rental with a taco cart or a BBQ caterer beats any restaurant on both cost and atmosphere, and nobody's watching the clock on a two-hour table limit.

Morning marine layer keeps coastal campuses cool and overcast, then it burns off and outdoor seating gets hot fast. Layers plus sunscreen and a hat covers both.
All campuses · Check early
Most ceremonies cap guest tickets per graduate and stream the rest. Confirm the limit before booking flights for the whole extended family.
Campus and coast · Golden hour
Campus photo spots are mobbed right after the ceremony. Book a photographer for late afternoon at the coast instead — better light, no queue.
La Jolla, UTC or Del Mar — all within about 15 minutes of campus. Book four to six months ahead, because campus-adjacent hotels sell out and raise rates as soon as commencement dates are published.
