Naval Base Coronado is an umbrella command covering NAS North Island at the north end of the island, Naval Amphibious Base Coronado on the Silver Strand, the Silver Strand Training Complex, Outlying Field Imperial Beach, Camp Michael Monsoor in the East County and San Clemente Island. North Island is the carrier and helicopter side; NAB Coronado is the home of Naval Special Warfare, BUD/S and the amphibious force. The defining constraint is geography: the island connects to the mainland only by the Coronado Bridge from downtown or the Silver Strand from Imperial Beach, plus the passenger ferry. Coronado itself is one of the most expensive housing markets in the county, so most families settle in Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, Point Loma or Ocean Beach, or take base housing on the island. If you are assigned to North Island and live in South Bay, the Strand is usually a saner drive than the bridge.

Getting on and off the island
There are exactly three routes, and each fails differently.
Silver Strand
The southern route through Imperial Beach. Longer in miles, often shorter in stress, and the only way home when the bridge is shut.
Coronado Ferry
Runs between the Ferry Landing and downtown's Broadway Pier and Fifth Avenue Landing. Foot and bike traffic only, and a legitimate commute for anyone working downtown.
Bikes
Coronado is flat and small. A huge share of island residents commute to base by bike, and there is bike parking at the gates.
Gate hours
Not every gate is open around the clock. Learn which gates run 24 hours before you take a midwatch.
Special events
The Coronado Bridge Run, Fourth of July and major hotel events choke traffic. On those days, leave absurdly early or take the ferry.
Housing around Coronado
The island is small and expensive, so most people compromise on location.
On-island base housing
Coronado has some of the most sought-after military housing in the Navy. Waitlists run long, so join the day orders drop even if you plan to rent off base.
Coronado village rentals
Charming, walkable and priced for millionaires and vacationers. Junior families rarely make the numbers work without roommates.
Imperial Beach
The most common off-base landing spot for the Strand commands. Beach adjacent, far cheaper, ten to twenty minutes up the Strand.
Point Loma and Ocean Beach
Popular with aviators. The bridge and downtown make it a real drive at peak, but the lifestyle sells itself.
Chula Vista and Eastlake
Where families go for space and schools, at twenty-five to forty minutes depending on the route and hour.

Navy Lodge on the island fills months out in PCS season. Book the moment your report date is firm.
Life on the island
Coronado functions like a small town that happens to host a carrier.
Coronado schools
A small, well-regarded district that is used to military kids arriving and departing mid-year. Enrollment requires proof of island residency.
The beaches
Coronado Central Beach is one of the best in the country and it is effectively your neighborhood park. Dog Beach is at the north end, near the base.
Orange Avenue
The main street: coffee, breakfast spots, a bookstore, the theater, and the Hotel del Coronado at the south end.
Noise
Helicopters and jets are constant near North Island. Locals call it the sound of freedom, but visit at midday before you rent under a flight path.
Beach closures
Portions of the Strand close for training regularly. Watch for posted signs rather than assuming access.
Parking in the village
Free but heavily used, with time limits on Orange Avenue. Summer weekends are brutal; residents walk or bike.

Not without a sponsor and a visitor pass processed at the visitor control center. Bring a REAL ID-compliant license or passport, vehicle registration and proof of insurance, and expect a background check.
Is it worth living in Coronado on BAH?
For most junior families, no — market rents exceed BAH by a wide margin. Base housing on the island is the practical way to live in Coronado, which is why the waitlist matters.
Bridge or Strand for the commute?
From downtown or anywhere north, the bridge. From Imperial Beach, Chula Vista or anywhere in South Bay, the Strand is usually faster and far less prone to sudden closures.
Where do BUD/S families usually live?
Imperial Beach and Chula Vista dominate because of proximity to NAB Coronado, with base housing on the Strand and in Coronado for those who get it.
Can you take the ferry with a bike?
Yes. Bikes ride the Coronado Ferry, which makes a downtown job plus island housing workable without a car.
